Shooting at Mandalay Bay Resort (Las Vegas)

It's not just the hurdle mate. Automatic weapons are illegal here. If someone wants to let loose on a crowd full of people they simply aren't able.
Here, too, without a very difficult to obtain licence obtained from the Federal Govt.

Are Canadians too stupid to make a semi auto rifle into an auto? I doubt it! Is there any legal reason to do so? Absolutely not...in Canada or USA!

Ever heard of Sandy Hook? If that didn't do it, nothing will....except widespread attacks on Senators, Congressmen, Governors and the President...and I am ABSOLUTELY NOT ADVOCATING THAT (Block caps intended).

The point I was trying to make was that someone walking around shooting people like sandy hook shooting can always be shot and stopped, they will still do damage but you can get to them. This dickhead was on the 32nd floor of a hotel, 400m away from huge crowds and likely had a scoped weapon (even iron sights wouldn't be too hard to hit centre of mass of a crowd of people from that distance)...he could not be stopped before mass damage was committed.

Therefore, prevention is better than cure.

I think the gun argument has tilted in favor of a ban or some tougher restrications.

The pro gun owners arguement of "well if people had guns they could take a shooter out" no longer exists after this incident. Nothing could stop him until he had done damage and been found.

Either way nothing will change and 10 years from now this shit will still happen.

Im sorry but the power of the minority power of the NRA will come out fighting and I am sorry again but the exact argument they will use is “if more people had guns they could have taken the shooter out” and sorry again but given the history of american mass shootings Nothing has changed. One of Americas biggest wars is on terrorism. It should be noted that more Americans have murdered each other than any terrorist organisation has ever done so. Yet they still do not take gun control seriously.

What possible sane reason can any individual have for purchasing an assault rifle ?

Do EITHER of you even know what an "assault rifle" is? Is it materially different than a rifle? How about a handgun?
I assume you were quoting me, your aim might be slightly out, an assault rifle is a weapon designed for war, usually automatic, designed to spray bullets at intermediate range to kill multiple targets.

Have you ever stopped to consider that less guns would result in less people that are in need of saving?

Which guns in whose hands? Is it possible, in your mind, to be a legal and responsible gun owner?

Many examples of large armed populations who don't commit such crimes you say? Name a few.

Switzerland and Serbia.

Do you honestly think that America is such a conundrum that it's impossible for outsiders to understand it?
What I understand about American history is that an amendment, introduced 226 years ago in order to safeguard the free state, is now being interpreted as a godgiven right to carry arms. Arms that are in no way comparable to the sort of weapons that were available back then.
Self protection and the protection of property from 'bad guys' isn't exactly safeguarding from a possible infringment on the state's sovereingty and the context of a well organised militia has conventiently been brushed out, those are mere details ofcourse.

Too bad you're not on SCOTUS! Here in America, laws are interpreted by them. Go to Law School, get elected to the bench, become a Constitutional Scholar and you will get to tell us all about it...oh, and you would be in the minority in the current SCOTUS. For some background, read the Heller decision and get back to me.

You take issue with my last point but you 're not willing to counter it? If fending off bad guys is working so well, then why is the number of gun incidents increasing?

Review that logic and get back to me. One doesn't follow the other.

Might it be because more guns will create more incidents?

Or, maybe it is guns in the wrong hands that causes the problem, because I can assure you I could own a million guns and I would never be a mass murderer! But, then who decides who the "wrong hands" are without hindsight?

Anyway, I think you guys are way too deep down the rabbit hole for any change in laws to have much of an effect, so I guess you'll just have to settle for wherever the ride'll take you. My guess is, it won't look pretty.

It is already ugly, and I hope there can be some realistic regulations imposed. However, as always, the response will be "bad guys don't give a fuck about the law...that's why we cal, them bad guys!

Do you think "the law" had ANY effect on this guy?

See, you conflated terms there, which is obfuscation and intellectually dishonest.

An "assault rifle" is a semi-automatic handgun attached to a long barrel, usually with a shoulder stock. It is a "souped up" handgun to enable shooting further distances with greater accuracy.

An AUTOMATIC RIFLE is a military weapon, or a semi automatic weapon ILLEGALLY MODIFIED. Emphasis on ILLEGAL.

I will agree that semi automatic rifles were designed for military action, and even the inventor of the AR-15 ("assault rifle" of choice in the USA) has come out to say that it was invented for use by the military in war, but the fact that it is a "souped up" semi automatic handgun is what has made it so difficult to legally ban under the 2A. I was at the range shot a guys AK-47 after I swapped a few shots with that for a magazine of Glock shooting for his girlfriend! (I know, sounds a bit crazy when I write it, too!) It was virtually uncontrollable and is clearly designed for spraying targets and built to be virtually indestructible, even after being buried in dirt for long periods (literally). It strikes me as a weapon of war. However, even that is a glorified handgun!
