should city sell de jong?

The answer is NO......

Although Barry has played excellent last season he is soon to be 32 years old and is now past his peak in terms of ability and pace. We need to get Nige to sign a new contract as I believe that next season he would be playing more than not.

We need to sell either Barry or DJ to make room for a top midfield player someone whom can put their foot in and also pass and maybe score a few goals - Barry and DJ offer bits of this but not all

One of them has to go because a Barry / DJ combo aint good enough for the top games and we almost blew it against QPR - i dont think we would have conceded 2 goals had Yaya been on the pitch

You can understand where he's coming from when Barry supposedly gets 120k, and the club is only willing to offer him 95k. He's only comparing himself to the defensive midfielders in our team and not with players like Yaya, Aguero, Tevez etc., also getting a super-sub role must be frustrating when he knows he can get into into any team in the Premier League (and abroad with a few exceptions).

anyway, sell him if he's not willing to sign a contract. Old and new players (and their agents) need to understand that we are now looking to conform to FFP and will not pay outrageous wages and fees. I think using him as a makeweight in a swap deal with RVP would be ideal.

De Jong + 10-15mil for RVP..
(of course, assuming that we are willing to get RVP for 20-25mil)

But Barry is better than, and more important to the team than De Jong so he should be paid more.

I think that is highly debateable. I say give De Jong the pay rise he wants and keep him. Too good to sell.

If he isn't signing a new contract then it is a reluctant yes from me. We cannot let him go for free.

??? Average player at best - wouldn't start for any of the top sides in the top 4 leagues

For me De Jong is one of the best players at his job being a defensive midfielder, he is just a natural protector of the back 4 and puts alot of fear into other teams attack.

Now Mancini has turned his into an attacking/flair teams De Jong is now 2nd choice, a player to come on to settle the midfield or protect our lead - every team needs a De Jong but I don't think you can play them every game if you want to win a match.

The Netherland played with 2 holding midfielders in De Jong and Van Bommel yesterday, they only looked more of an attacking threat when they took 1 off in De Jong and brought on Van Der Vaart, like I said I don't think you can always play a De Jong style player if you want to go all out attacking!

There are other players that need to be shifted bfore I let De Jong go. For all his limitations still believe he is one of the best at doing the defensive holding role. Why break up a squad so soon after they have made history. It would be cheaper to pay him his salary IMO.

Initially, I'm pretty sure Barry was on £90k a week, when the transfer was going through Villa management said in an interview they offered to make him the highest paid player at Villa on £85k a week, in a later interview Barry was asked if he came to us for the money, he replied that he was only on £5k a week more than Villa's last offer, whether something has changed since then I don't know but I do remember the above quite well.

Personally I'd hate De Jong to leave, he has a huge part to play with our club as far as I'm concerned.
