Should Dzeko start on Sunday?

He definitely should not start, his first touch is alarmingly bad and we cannot afford to give United possession back so cheaply.

Hart
Richards Kompany Lescott Clichy
De-jong Barry
Y.Toure
Silva Nasri
Aguero

I love that team but wouldn't we struggle v their wingers? I'd would love to see our small skilful players run riot versus their defenders and pretty static midfield ala Barca

Said at the game on tues that both Dzeko and Johnson had booked their places in the starting line-up..... against Wolves not United.

Balotelli is bang in-form. Aguero might start from the bench. Mancini will possibly revert to type and start more defensively with Mario up front on his own.

Not all players respond to the "rotation" approach equally.

I'm not making excuses for Dzeko's heavy touches vs Villareal but strikers can go through lucky patches (e.g. 4 goals vs Spurs) and lean patches where nothing quite goes in.

Look at Diego Forlan at Utd...looked awful but arguably one of the outstanding players at the 2008 WC for Uruguay + twice top scorer in Spanish league with Villareal + then A. Madrid.

Balotelli + Aguero clearly both able to make a contribution coming off the bench or playing in selective games....
....but maybe Dzeko needs that regular run of games to build up his confidence + his touch + his goals.

Bottom line: I like Dzeko, but have this nagging feeling that his career with City is destined to be very stop-start...and that he might be better off at the sort of club where he gets to play nearly every week ( Villa / Newcastle etc)

I agree with your bottom line, we should loan him for a season to see how good he will be at other club (with regular appearances), and find ourselves a fast striker like Edinson Cavani.

i think he should start tbh, he and Aguero and worked well 2gether at start of season, hes gone down hill a bit, but he needs confidence back to bring back his season begining form. person dzeko and Aguero work well 2gether in PL.

but if mancini is gona just stick him up front on his own, then i wouldnt start him tbh

We paid £27m for him - to loan him out would show that as being a terrible mistake to have signed him in the first place. If we loan him out, it would leave us short, and probably paying over the odds for someone else, as we don't seem able to promote younger players through presently. Why? God knows, but that's a whole new argument and needs a different thread.

Let's stick to 'should he play on Sunday' - NO!

get hart to replace him upfront ;)

Wasn't impressed by Dzeko last season, but obviously thought he'd need time to adapt so was still on the fence.

When this season started I thought he'd finally come good, but the past few games he appears to have taken a backward step again...although I've not written him off.

Certainly don't think he's as adaptable as the other strikers we have in the squad though. Balo over Dzeko for me at the moment.

Problem is with Dzeko is you either get Ibrahimovic or Bambi.

dzeko dont come close to the worst ibra , nor even in his best games
Strange that Milan are struggling so much in Serie A 13th at present with 2 wins 2 draws and 2 losses! They have only scored 8 league goals in 8 matches we have scored 27 in same games Dzeko has scored 6 league goals himself. Ibra has scored 1 league goal this season.

(Edit: TBF Ibra's games have been limited to 3 league games and he has scored well in other competition, 6 goals from 8 games overall, includes pre-season friendlies! Dzeko has scored 8 goals in 14 games overall)

Regular games, receiving praise and encouragement from the manager give players confidence. With rotation it has been stop start for Dzeko. However I agree Balo seems in more form and Dzeko missed a few good chances on Tuesday.

I just don't think Edin is a lone striker. He's a big target and he holds up well, but our squad just doesn't perform well with a lone striker anyway--with NDJ in midfield especially it leaves us with not enough people to commit forward and support an attack, and we don't really play with traditional wingers for the striker to play the ball out to and start a rapid counter.

So, to me, the question for Sunday is formation. If we're going 4-5-1 again, then probably play Mario alone and pray he doesn't draw himself a red. If Aguero is going to play the 90, then I'd probably put Edin right back in there and try to let him regain his confidence when given another striker to work off of.
