Should you always support your 'home' team?

Generally speaking, I think you should. Most people aren't given a choice though are they as you just follow your family's team. There are always exceptions and reasons to support a non local team though, some valid and some dubious.

Im starting this post as some people on here seem to think you have to be from Manchester to support City. Well I was born in South Shields and have supported City since 1978 (when I was 12) when I watched news prog 'Nationwide' who ran a series on City called 'Saturday's Heroes'. I still have the book which could be sent away for. I love City I think as much as anyone and have never ever thought about changing teams as they're in my DNA. I get to home and away matches when finances permit and even go to reserve games, home and away. I love it when City win against Newcastle and Sunderland! Think I'll put a plug for my blog in while I'm ranting...it's http://city1894.blogspot.com
Thank you and goodnight!

To be a proper fan you have to have been born on the terraces at York away,

I just started supporting the team my Dad supports and always would have done regardless of what they were like. If that had been his home town I'd be supporting Zimbabwe Saints or whatever now, which wouldn't be much fun or very easy to get to.

Yes, they should either be your local team or you should have some sort of connection with them eg. family.

I have no family members who support City and at the time 89/90 I new no fucker who supported City, shall I take my Swansea ticket back, all 6 of them ? Be quick as I'm getting another two tomorrow.

Support who you want, but I think you get more out of it if you're supporting your local team.

A mate of mine, a United fan, hates it when he hears all the different accents at the game. I suppose that's because it washes away at the group's solidarity. If there's no other common ground than liking the same team (different class, different upbringing, different areas), then there's not the strength that other less successful clubs might enjoy.

Personally, I think a club should be more than cheering on the same football team.

Never lived in Manchester. All my family are Mancs. Went to my first game at the age 6. Never had the choice to support anyone else and never would want to support anyone else... And City is a huge part of my life.

SO NO personally, others may disagree

In this day and age , support go you damn well want. There is no law to say who you can support..
