Silva v's Scholes

The biggest compliment I can pay Scholes is that he is in a small group of rag players that I wouldn't have minded seeing him swap their shirt for ours and play for City.
He might not have had the bag of tricks of a Zidane and other players of that ilk, but he got his fucking job done and all the superstars of footy line up to praise him, so there must be something to it.

For what it's worth I think there's little to choose between them (assuming Scholes is/was at his peak).

Certainly his long range passing and goal contribution are better the Silva's. Not so sure about his tackling mind;-)

Best player of his generation? Not sure, but a great player nontheless. If Silva wins half as much with us as Scholes did with them I'll more than happy.

Just because he played for them doesn't automatically make him overrated.

Spot on. Scholes was outstanding. You don't get respect off someone like Zidane without being an excellent footballer.

I remember a thread on here after they beat Newcastle early last season and it was split but obviously we are all blues.

Silva, well I have never seen a more technically gifted football in a blue shirt. Reminds me of Kinkladze in some ways (goal at Blackpool) but there are differences as well. I have hardly ever seen anyone with his ability to thread a through ball.

I read something on the Guardian website I think recently where a Premiership player was basically saying that next time you see a brilliant through ball don't be surprised because there is a huge emphasis on where players will be and it is drilled into players - making out like you shouldn't be praising them too much but Silva it is clearly an instinctive thing. A real talent but then you don't get 50 odd caps for Spain by not being that. His awareness, weight of pass and ability to spot a pass are unrivalled for me.

I'm gay for Silva, but Scholes was fucking quality in his day.

To compare the two is difficult, Silva's shooting from range is non-existent compared to Scholes', but Silva is possibly the more intricate of the two, and certainly isn't haunted by the "red rage" that blighted Scholes.

To dismiss Scholes out of hand is impossible. He is simply the best English footballer I've seen, but then Silva could well be the most talented player I've ever in a city shirt. Ask me again in a few years, but here's an extract of an interview with Xavi last year;

Is Paul Scholes the English Xavi?

[Xavi interrupts, almost bursting with enthusiasm] Paul Scholes! A role model. For me – and I really mean this – he's the best central midfielder I've seen in the last 15, 20 years. I've spoken to Xabi Alonso about him. He's spectacular, he has it all: the last pass, goals, he's strong, he doesn't lose the ball, vision. If he'd been Spanish he might have been rated more highly. Players love him.

Let's be realistic here, Silva has time on his side but I'll tell you what, that little Ginger Twat "Was" one of the best players of his generation no question ! I'm a Blue but you have to admire what a player he was - take off your blue tinted specs for a minute and any genuine football fan would agree.

The United States of America is the greatest country on earth, always been and always will be (they claim).

United fans, Scholes is a football god... When the tides i shifting people tend to loose perception and glorify the past... Scholes have done much for them, so of course when its over and they remember the past some idiots think he was worldclass. They did win alot and Scholes was a part of that....

If Silva is better, well i think he need to win some more trophys for his clubs to prove himself over a longer time.

Did Scholes have a immedietly impact in crucial matches, so that United won trophies? Finals, semifinals? Or just overall good performance?

2002-2003, 14 league goals on 33 matches... Thats how good he was, so you´re right.

edit: my swedish spelling sucks....

Scholes is one of a very few RAG players I actually respect. An incredible player, couldn't tackle to save his life though.

It's not about tricks and all that, but his footballing brain is second to none, and it's something that you can't coach.

And he's scored some absolute beautys from outside the box. Would have taken him in a City jersey any day. Even now.

That Scholes, Roy Keane partnership back in the day was second to none.

Maybe if he wasn't such a quiet player off the pitch and looked for the limelight more he would be considered the best without question. A hell of a pro.
What would England have been like with him he had stayed.

I think that's the most I've ever talked about the Rags in a positive way.

You've got to take the players for what they are, and while ya, he's a RAG, respect where respects earned.

Fuck em anyway.

whenever the press speak about the scum, they tend to use superlatives;

Brian Briggs' goal against Arsenal - Greatest ever FA Cup goal.
Eric Cuntandhalf - Greatest ever foreign player in Prem. history.
Gary Chuckle - Greatest fullback of his generation
Paul (Ho ho good old Scholesy..he can't tackle can he ??) blah. blah, bollocks.

Bacon face does it all the time.. speaks about greatest ever cup tie ... greatest ever European Cup final...

Just ignore the pricks, we know the truth !!!!

Sorry Kass wasn't aimed at you mate was just my tuppence worth added to the thread.
Let's be honest if he was fame hungry and good looking then the myth of DB7 wouldn't exist because he wasn't fit to lace Scholes boots in his prime.

The Scholes thing is a bit of a strange one.

He is easily the best English midfielder in a generation or two.

That said, those talking about him in the same breath as Zidane et al are on some good shit.

Silva is the more clever and inventive player. Scholes has a definite edge on lethalness in the final third.
