Singing section/Atmosphere

For people stood in 110-111 what’s happened where you are?

You used to be decent, small, not particularly loud because of lack of numbers, but decent and on good days it spread down the East Stand.

Now it’s like they’ve been ordered to stay quiet.

When I was in 111 for 4 seasons there was a group of lads 3/4's of the way up and they used to come up with loads of good chants. They used to create loads of banter with the away fans. They used to get all the chants going, which spread to 110 and 109. Those were the day's when 109 stood, and there was loads of trouble with Showsec, due to the club trying to make fans sit down in 109.

When I was in 111 the Kippax corner was the loudest part of the stadium. TBH you couldn't hear the South Stand much. They were pretty quiet bar the big games.

Something has happened since the SS expansion and the offer of the £299 seats up there.

TBF the Kippax corner can still rise to the cause. Celtic, Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal, etc.

if they can sing for those games why aren't they doing it for the other games ? - like they used to. i agree with the post above, its like they've all just disappeared. they can't all have left though, when ss3 was created. there was a game last season i think when delph got the crowd up and the corner started singing again - there are still enough people there.

even that banter you talk about, that doesnt even happen anymore.

I agree with what someone mentioned earlier. We need more chants that can be sustained because at the moment we seem to be singing a different song every 30 seconds which results in 3 different ones being sang by other parts of the ground. If a song is sang continuously it will eventually pick up when the play builds up. A perfect example was Leicester in the cup a couple of years ago when the fernandinho one was introduced. The stand was bouncing with us singing that after we scored.

For me we need to swap the away fans and kippax corner, merge the two sections that sing. It keeps the away fans nearby for banter and cause to sing back to. It will encourage the kippax closer to the halfway line to stand and sing, bet there's loads in therre who want to stand and sing but can't because of the showsec idiots. Get the people on cheap tickets in SS3 down into the 'family stand' so we have two opposing singing ends and get the embarrasing empty family stand up in the third tier. Combine our singers, keep the away fans nearby in the corner and watch how the atmosphere will improve, a WHOLE south stand and kippax together, magic!

Im in ss3,been there since it was built the last 3 seasons.all this talk of supporters who sang before they moved up there,i dont buy it,im in 318 and its dead, totally dead for 95% of any game and that includes the bigger games, the whole ss3 from 314 down to where we r in 318 is very quiet in my opinion, saturday v the geordies was the same, outsung for most of the game,I just dont get it why our fans dont want to or cant be arsed to sing and get behind our team,my 10 year old son is getting more and more upset and downbeat with how bad it really is atmosphere wise.

As the north stand doesn't seem to be getting expanded anytime soon, I think maybe a singing section in tier 3 would be a solution to the acoustics problem. both Burnley and Wolves fans in SS tier 3 made massive amounts of noise and the truth is that if you are anywhere other than the SS tier 1 you can't hear anything that is being sung in 115 etc.

The way the sound travels in the 1st tier is a big problem and im in 118 and I can't even hear what 115 or the kippax are singing. I've noticed that recently a small group of singers in SS3 have been starting the songs we sing in 118 because we can hear them but we can't hear 115, so 115, 111, and the rest of the SS including tier 3 are all singing different songs. Shifting up there nearer to the roof may be a solution to get everyone singing in unison.

I was just reading this article from a Newcastle fan who visited last Saturday and hope we can do something about how we’re perceived by other fans - We used to pride ourselves on singing and being loud, not just a quick song and only when we’re winning !!! CTID since 1974 home & away and a regular in Division’s 1&2 and it’s not good what I see never mind how others see us!?

Yeah you're right, I think some of the lads have said it before, change the away end get us all together in the south stand behind the goal....as being split doesn't help us at all and our away support allocation needs to have a ballot - I was at Leicester in the Carabao cup and seeing all the young lads creating that party atmosphere was absolutely class....

Is too much time spent thinking about and working on displays that last one minute and are forgotten about quickly rather than the atmosphere that lasts 95 minutes and remembered forever?

This is often said but without much thought.

Displays and singing are two totally separate things, the display is visual to create a presence and is probably one of the biggest successes in our attempts to improve the atmosphere. We are held back in having better and bigger displays due to the following, funding ( as we rely on fans kindly donating ), fans not arriving in seats before KO and health & safety.

The singing part of atmosphere improvement is much to say out of our hands. We can create a block or singing section or group up at the front of 115 at cup games. But if the fans don't sing it is not due to 1894, we are here to organise that block or group, we cant force 650 fans to sing. We are a small group of organised life long city fans that are trying to get fans to sing, but we don't own the right to every fans voice box on match day.

Some displays take 3 or 4 days to organise and then take 10 of us to go in to the stadium 3 hours before KO to set up. I can safely say if I put this time and effort in to singing preparation for a game it would make no difference whatsoever. It is those individual fans in a created singing section that are responsible for singing and the songs they chose to sing.

Its simple, club anthems, long songs, belt your heart out !
