Skipton, or somewhere like it.

Went to Buxton years ago, might give that a go again.

Skipton is far better.

The market is good, some nice pubs in the centre, a couple of great chippies (Yorkshire chippies are the best in the world!), the canals, and they've recently opened up the Russian Tea House which is a decent place for a cuppa.

Alternatively, head to Haworth... steam trains, museums, great pubs and chippies, deep in the heart of Bronte country.

In fact, do them both. Near enough to do the same day.

Bang on! This is my old stomping ground and a wonderful part of the world it is too. If you do go to Skipton make sure to go to Stamfords for the worlds best pork pies, get warm ones, mmmmmm I'm a veggie now but I still get excited by the thought of those pies! The Castle is fantastic too.

Pubs, ignore the ones on the High Street, they're crap, get yourself to the Royal Shepherd for some Copper Dragon or maybe The Rose and Crown where a member of my extended family could beat you up(they do this to strangers as a matter of course)!

York is still a great day out and has Sam Smiths Pubs selling bitter at £1.70 a pint.

Like the look of Clitheroe, just had a google.

The Trough of Bowland is nice. Just beyond Clitheroe. Grassington near Skipton is very nice too.
Aye, it is nice for a drive. I used to drive up to uni (Lancaster) through the Trough rather than use the motorway. Put about thirty minutes on my journey but far more pleasant. Also saved me a good few hours quite a few times when there were bad crashes/school holidays/Blackpool lights/bank holiday traffic jams etc.

If you're going around Clitheroe there's a nice pub just down the main A road (A59 for avoidance of all doubt) called The Swan with Two Necks in a little hamlet called Pendleton. It's shortlisted for CAMRA Pub of the Year, final three I believe. Food in there is home-made and reasonably-priced and there's five real ale plus one cider tap on the agenda if that's your thing (it is mine).

I really can't rate York highly enough. Absolutely love the place. Plenty of great drinking establishments and some great restaurants. Plus, I'm yet to see a single group of nob heads/chavs/hoodies or general loudmouths walk the streets of York.

Drinks wise, Stonegate Yard is a beaut of a place. Can also sit outside under the canopy with the heaters on.

Food wise, El Gaucho is possibly home to the greatest Steak i have ever had the pleasure of mauling. For lunch though, revert back to my Stonegate Yard suggestion. They do some cracking sandwiches - noteably the Steak baguette.

Anyone else visited these places in York? Can't just be me who enjoys York as much!

Plus.....its only an hour or so on the train!

Ramsbottom. Hear me out.

At the Manchester Food and Drink Festival a couple of months back, The Chocolate Cafe won cafe of the year whilst Ramsons won restaurant of the year. Other nice places to eat too (Indian, Thai, etc). Micro brewery is supposed to be very good too.

Get steam train from Bury to Rammy. Farmers Market at rammy (not sure if that's on sat or sun) or Bury Market are both worth a visit according to a thread from last week.

^This^

You also have decent walks around the area aswell... You could have a walk up Holcombe Hill, over the Moors etc.... http://www.eastlancsrailway.org.uk/thin ... o/outdoor/

The fishing lake on the A59 (was called Pine Lodge) used to be my Dads and I used to frequent that pub regularly.

Did you ever live in Lancaster mate?

Oh aye, decent pub. Don't know about the fishing lake (know which one it is of course) as I've never been keen on fishing.

Lived on the uni campus, never in town.

Well was off today and weighed up whether to go Leeds or Chester for a day out. In the end I went down Chesterfield and then Bakewell and must admit had a thoroughly enjoyable day, did the Monsal Trail from bakewell up to Buxton, only did half way mind bloody knackering as well but worth it for the views of the peak district then bussed it back to bakewell had a pint and a pie in the boozers there which were all decent if not packed with ramblers and families with it being half term. Went back to Chesterfield and had a wander, is a nice market town and the pubs were alright, good day all round and on a side note there is some right nice women in chesterfield also
