Sky (bet) sports and Paul Merson

Not really. It's an individual thing. I put 5 quid on guess the score each city game. Usually lose but a lot of fun.

Merse has an addictive personality.
If it wasn't gambling it could be collecting. Training shoes ? Then what ban foot ware ?
Do you think it's a good idea for people with an addictive personality (which is by definition, the gambling industry's best customers) to be bombarded with adverts for the thing they're trying to give up? It's a fairly well-researched area and pretty established that advertising increases people's spending on gambling, and that applies equally to problem gamblers and normal gamblers. We ban tobacco advertising because it's addictive, so why not gambling? It doesn't stop you having a cheeky bet when you feel like it.

A football fan who wants to watch West Ham vs. Newcastle, including the pre-match and post match, I'm basically subjected to a nearly 3 hour gambling advert where the only time there's nothing advertising gambling on the screen is during the adverts for other stuff.

It's true that people can get addicted to all sorts of things, but that doesn't mean we should be encouraging it, especially at a time when the number of addicts is not only increasing, but also getting younger.

He obviously didn't heed the warnings, If the fun stops, stop. Surely that will assess even the most addictive of gambles?

Seriously though, hope he gets help. He's clearly asking for it now. Even sky should see a responsibility to step up, given he's a well known face of theirs and they are themselves well known for their football and betting services.

There was/is a culture of gambling and drinking to excess in football in particular, arsenal most have been a hotbed for it in the 90s, and reading autobiographies like Paul Lake and Quinny's city certainly were not excluded from that. Can't see it under pep and khaldoon now, no hopefully that is progress. Or ruining English football culture, as Duncan Castles will no doubt call it.

Find it a farce how close the betting indistry is to our sports, sponsoring, their own TV channels, nudging the odds in plain sight, as long a certain people get a slice of that pie, with a small disclaimer over their every action.
