Sky - Mané Red card poll (official appeal rejected)

There was a match a few years ago (I forget the 2 teams, but I'm sure it was from a European league) where a ball was slung in from the wing & a player went up for an overhead kick which would have been a Goal of the Season contender had the opposition defender not got his head to the ball a split second quicker.

The defender cleared the ball & got booted in his face for his troubles. I remember one of our Referees on Ref Watch saying an overhead kick carries the risk of a sending off if another player got there first.

He said ALL players have been warned about high boots, but Refs are allowed to interpret the danger posed on a situation by situation basis. His advice was very clear; If a player carries out a flying kick like the overhead player (or Mane in this case), he better make sure he connects first, because if he doesn't & ends up injuring an opponent, he's likely to get a straight red.

Simples.
A driving analogy should cast some light on the situation to some of our less enlightened ex-pros, although it probably won't.

Get caught doing 45mph in a 30 zone and you'll get 3 points on your licence.

Kill someone when you're doing 45 in a 30 and you'll most likely get a term of imprisonmemt.

The sanctions reflect the outcome for the driver, largely irrespective of their state of mind at the time they were driving; and drivers run the risk accordingly, including, it should be said, not getting caught at all.

It really shouldn't be that hard to grasp.

Too right - Liverpool had favourable reffing for decades and have always moaned like fuck about any decision they dislike. This one is a more blatantly correct decision, but anyone remember the 'Geoff Hurst' effort by David White in August 1991? I was a modern languages student at the time, spending my summer abroad. I got back to Manchester three weeks after the game, and Elton Welsby was still banging on about the ball not crossing the line nightly in the Granada Reports sports news segments. Makes you sick.

PS - Apologies if that's been mentioned already. I've not seen it and there are too many pages to hunt through to see if there's a reference.
It was a celebration by White that I'll never forget. His hands were rested on the top of his head for what seemed like ages as he looked at the linesman (as they then were) before he gave it.

What I still can't understand here is if the 'tackle' had been at a lower height, say ankle or knee high, between 2 outfield players, and he had been both feet off the ground in the same fashion, studs showing, and using similar force, it would still be a red card in any game, and there would be little debate.

BREAKING NEWS. The FA Appeals Committee held an emergency meeting at 2:00 pm today to discuss Mane's red card. At 2:01 pm the FA issued a statement saying they have decided to rescind the red card and have apologised profusely to Mr Mane.

John Moss has also apologised stating that he doesn't really know the rules and that he didn't realise how touchy the Liverpool supporters are. Moss has been delisted from the EPL and has been reassigned to the Liverpool Sunday League where he will be advised on the rules of the game by touchline spectators.

The FA have also given their comments on Man City goalkeeper Ederson. He has been found guilty of violent conduct in relation to the recently introduced rule of "endangering an opponent's foot with the use of one's head". A 20 game ban and a fine of £2 million has been imposed with no right of appeal.

Furthermore, MCFC have been ordered to pay LFC £100 million for causing distress and damage to a successful football club from a bygone era.

Tony Cottee on SSN yesterday disagreed and felt it was only a yellow. He must be right
