Sleep

As humans/homo we went through tens, even hundreds, of thousands of years where we won’t have had “full night’s sleep”. We managed to evolve just fine. I’m not sure it’s the length of sleep we have that’s the issue, it’s the quality of the sleep we get in the bursts we manage to get that matters. If we manage to get a deep sleep even if only for four hours that is probably better than being in bed for ten hours but not sleeping well.

There's much truth in that mate, our natural sleeping pattern was one of awake/ forage/scrounge a few hours, sleep a few hours, awake/forage/scrounge a few hours, sleep a few hours etc, the 'one long slumber' is a product of how the relatively modern world works and what we've pretty much been forced into.

To be honest him waking up three times a night is only recently. For two years it was more like 8+ times and sometimes as many as 20. We’ve had two kids who have suffered terribly with gas, constipation, bloating, teething etc. Our quality of sleep for five years has been a joke but it is getting better.

I think the key bit in this was the decision to have another! I feel for you!

Sleep is the cousin of death.
I have sleep apnoea which is where you stop breathing when asleep and a secondary mechanism in you body kick starts your breathing again when oxygen levels start to run low. If that secondary mechanism fails...................

My dog has that, jesus i thought it was just a thing, never knew it was sleep apnoea. I bet your missus is a wreck because i know i wake when he stops breathing, no idea how i know i just wake up. As soon as i wake i know to nudge him so he breathes and i won't do a thing for about 20min until i know he is fine again. Do people do that with you at all or do they just leave you to die like the horrible people they are hehe :-D ?

I have sleep apnoea too. One fishing holiday on the Ebro, we'd been on the piss and that's when I get it worst. My mate I roomed with said I sounded like a chieftain tank with a fucked gearbox.

Its a pretty common condition in people, an estimated 9% of population have it to varying degrees. Its commonly associated to bad snoring and happens when your soft pallet collapses and blocks your airways. More common with people with thick bull necks. Yes it drives my Mrs totally nuts but she has the good grace to give me a prod after 30 seconds or so. For anyone that has ever woken suddenly, fighting for breath and feeling like you have been drowning, thats the result of sleep apnoea. Its got gradually worse over the last year so its a health kick for me come monday and lose some weight which should help. If it doesnt then there are treatments/mouth guards that are said to help. In a small number of cases it can be fatal causing cardiac arrest.

If your dog snores or is overweight its quite likely that he has it. It can be harmless but the treatment for humans is the same for dogs! get fit, lose weight. If he has done it all his life I wouldnt worry mate but if its a recent thing maybe get it checked.

yeah, drink defo makes it worse. Does it make you tired through the day? I could sleep standing up (which actually helps with the sleep apnoea!).

No, not really tired, and I don't have sleep apnoea every night.

I was diagnosed with it in about 2012. An ex gf insisted I went to the docs to get it checked out. He referred me to a specialist a Wythenshawe hospital. I was asked to fall asleep in a darkened room 2 hours whilst being monitored with some fancy electronic kit checking heart and pulse rate etc.

On consulting the specialist I asked the doctor if I had sleep apnoea .He said I had the condition. I was asked to wear a wristband for a full 8hours sleep to monitor my sleep, then an appointment was made for a return visit to discuss the findings.

On the return visit I waited for the specialist to analyse the data. When he called me into his office I asked him how many times I stopped breathing in the night whilst trying to be jokey about it... His poker face was unwavered as he told me "653 times".

He said I needed to take a machine to help me breathe whilst sleeping. After 10 minutes or so of the ex pisstaking I managed to nod off for the night looking something like Hannibal Lecter. In the morning I woke up and nearly shit myself as the mask had slipped and was over my face with oxygen leaking, sounded like a snake hissing. That was that and I've not wore the mask thing since.
