Sleep

There is a difference between being tired and being fatigued. Tiredness can be resolved with sleep, fatigue is a chronic condition and comes from a cumulative lack of sleep. Recovering from fatigue is not a simple case of getting loads of sleep. It requires multiple sessions of 'quality' sleep. Quality sleep is a cyclical process. Each sleep cycle last about 90 minutes and you need around 4-6 cycles of sleep to be fully rested.

Getting quality sleep is another matter.

17 Proven Tips to Sleep Better at Night (healthline.com)

Thanks for the replies.

Definitely think coming off the screens before bed is a good start.
As to the age thing - is there a reason behind that? Fitness wise I'm probably in the best shape of my life (although last year's Covid bout didn't help).

I suspect my bed isn't helping but I'm not changing that until I move from this place. I remember once staying in Wales on this incredible mattress and having the best night's sleep I ever, ever had....asleep within minutes and didn't wake once until the alarm went off.

I've heard Matthew Walker mentioned so many times so I'll take the plunge with his book.

I look after myself as best I can but can't seem to get on top of this....

I've actually started taking Magnesium biclisinate (two 1000mg tabs at 8) and these absolutely make me wind down but much of this is lost when I'm on my phone in bed :(

I'm at least going to try and fix this.

My head's fucked due to sleep deprivation. I suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome and the meds have made it worse. Some nights i get no sleep...sometimes i take an extra tablet. both means i feel crap the next day.
What meds you on for it?
My RLS drives me round the bend some days.

Do you have any breathing issues.
My mate struggled for years until he met this girl. She stayed over one night and said in the morning that it was like he stopped breathing at points during the night. He went to the gp and a load of tests later diagnosed sleep apnoea. He now wears one of those masks and reckons it’s the best thing that ever happened to him.

The girl binned him off shortly after though so swings and roundabouts.

You need less as you get older I’ve found, I’ve always been ok with 6 hours or so and can function fine but I do normally sleep like a log tbh.
Stay of the screens and read instead mate, it’ll work wonders I swear.

Reduce fat percentage
Increase fitness
Increase strength
Do enough physical activity in a day to be tired at night
Stay hydrated!
East enough protein
Eat enough vitamins+minerals
Try and avoid stress (meditation/massage/hydrotherapy helps)
Get plenty of fresh air through the day, also keep windows open to allow for good ventilation and getting fresh air during the night
Increase sexual activity
Avoid tv and mobile devices within a few hours before bed
Avoid eating within four hours of going to bed
Get good pillows, even very expensive ones, they can be the best investment you’ll make
Keep bedsheets clean and fresh (change them regularly)
Make sure you get into bed clean and fresh yourself
Make sure the first thing you do in the morning is making your bed, so that by the time you get to the nighttime and it’s time to get into bed, the bed is nice to get into (making your bed as soon as you get up also puts you in the right frame of mind for the day ahead, as you’ve already ticked off job #1)
Don’t put off jobs that need doing, otherwise they’ll be on your mind at night in bed - get a To-Do list and get the jobs done, pay your debts, apologise to the missus, clear your conscience…

Or, if all that sounds like hard work then do as I do and have a big spliff.
