So; what are you driving at the moment?

Must admit after watching a doc' last night about the beetle, hitler and Henry Ford it put me off a bit.
Car's only gonna do about 3k a year and parts etc cheap if it goes wrong. Daughter has a ford and it's been great, as was my little fiesta all them years ago.

C reg Fiesta Ghia - bought new - lovely car but battery kept draining. Dealers couldn't/wouldn't fix it so traded in and went back to an Uno - far superior car.

E reg Orion 1.6i Ghia - lovely car but plagued with electrical faults - central locking bingo with guess the door lock thats failed this time and it played its joker by not locking the boot. And boy could the bastard rust.

12 reg C-Max 1.6d Titanium - new - needed a new fuel filter every 3rd service according to the manual - in reality they blocked every 10k. Bit of a shit coz service intervals were 12.5k miles. When I got rid it was on its 9th - should have been only its 3rd. Incredibly annoying going into limp home mode. Electrical gremlins - alarm failed and guess what - it and the immobiliser fail together - brilliant design. Complete new loom for wiper system and new wiper motor after that shorted out - happened again when the pump motor then caused the washer bottle to split and leak.

In all 3 cases main dealers were unimpressive with their attitude.

I left a job with a company car in Dec and was back in the land of buying my own. Needed a larger car to move kids from Uni flat to Uni flat so wanted something to last me a couple of years - decided a Picasso fitted the bill. Didn't want a diesel as they are the new anti-Christ. The 2 litre HDI is a bit old school so in the authorities cross hairs for punitive taxes if they feel the need and the more modern 1.6 HDI has a fragile and expensive to replace dual mass flywheel ( in fairness all dual mass fly wheels are dear ) so wanted a petrol. Talked to a guy on my street who has had 2 - my Dad had one ( how I know about the flywheel ) and spoke to a couple of owners in carparks plus read online owners reviews. Spotted one at a garage just had a new clutch ( they all need them @ 70-80k miles ) service - aircon regas - 2 owners - HPI checked and 6 months warranty. Have fitted a DAB converter and use a windscreen fit Garmin sat nav so it has DAB, Nav, Electric front windows and suits me fine - does@ 36 - 42mpg depending whether in town or on a run.

Had it 7 months and done just over 10k miles - the snow fried the alternator - the warranty paid for a new one - I put 2 tyres on it as I wasn't chuffed about the grip in the snow and I stupidly reversed into a bollard bending the rear exhaust section so I had to pay for that as well as the tyres. Never misses a beat and all for £1500.

Do your homework and you can get some right good motors for very little money these days.
