Israel is an illegitimate state
What does it mean to you?

Do you identify as this yourself?

What policies would you like to see introduced?

Who are your political heroes (contemporary or recent past) in public life/philosophy/commentary etc?

Just a starting block for debate, please add your own questions and answers as you wish.

What does it mean to you?
An entrenchment of establishment values delivered by diktat by those with higher social standing in order to cement their place in the prevailing social hierarchy. It is deference to power of religion and to wealth. Doff cap tug forelock.
Do you identify as this yourself?
As much as I identify as a Stretford Ender.
What policies would you like to see introduced?
None, they are fruitcakes. The religious right in the USA are Social Conservatives, identify with the NRA and are likely to be Zionists. They believe Jesus will rise again in Jerusalem, which was why Trumps recognition of Jerusalem was widely lauded by the evangelicals. Most highly religious countries around the world are socially conservative, this includes the likes of Iran, Malaysia and Indian Hindu's
Who are your political heroes (contemporary or recent past) in public life/philosophy/commentary etc?
I wonder if Jan Smuts will get a mention

Is Social Conservativism reactionary?

As Social Conservatism does not fit comfortably with Keynesian economics, who or what is the preferred economist/economic model to follow?

Can Social Conservatism thrive in a secular state?

Is Social Conservatism anti humanity?

Shock horror we’ve already gone to the extremes. What I’ve just read is the equivalent of describing socialism as the 100’s of millions dead in the 20th century, in Communist countries.

Social conservatism is just the social policy side of conservatism.

In Britain, its traditionalist values, based on family, institutions, the countryside being protected, the church, law and community.

Of course the socialists on here, as well as the social liberals, will try and paint it as fascism or the Trump loons in America, it’s because the working class in this country are moving towards it again, more and more, it’s why they have stopped voting Labour.

So what happens? The left lash out, as they usually do.

It’s tiresome but I’m still not going to let a self declared, yes he said it to my face, communist, dictate on this forum what social conservatism is.

1/ no, not at all, it’s steeped in tradition

2/ it can fit perfectly well with it Keynesian economics, Clement Attlee says hello

3/ Yes, it does right now and many prominent conservatives, such as Douglas Murray, are atheists

4/ what an obnoxious thing to say, of course it isn’t. How can an ideology that is pro life and puts family at the heart of society, anti human? Coming from a communist that’s hilariously poor

In what we see in the UK, as demonstrated by the likes UKIP and Brexit Party.

To me it's a mythical view of the past, nostalgia for an England that never existed. These views are reflected by the likes of Scruton and Hitchens in their attitude to sexual practices of homosexuals and reductionist view of the world. Longing for order and discipline.

There can't be a third gender either despite evidence of this in numerous cultures dating back to antiquity. Everything has to be framed through an Anglican cultural view of the world.

I think you’ve summed up what the left view conservatism as very well, of course I disagree.

I think on your first point, many live their lives that way. There’s even Labour voters in my church that don’t practice sex outside of marriage and don’t watch pornography and whilst they don’t hate LGBT people or have any ill feeling towards them, they still wouldn’t support the movement as a whole in society.

I think it’s easy to look around at your close friends and family and see people similar to us but there’s a very large number of conservatives who are behaving as such.

Of course we fall short every now and again.

Regarding your third gender point, I mean, that’s more mythical than a mythical view of England that never existed, but that’s another thread entirely ;-)

I do agree the view of England as you describe isn’t reality in the main but conservatism is the process of trying to get there, even if you fall short you’ve improved things.

The Kinks are great by the way.

weekly thread with left wingers asking why normal people aren't like them and then backslapping themselves about it with the usual derogatory tone until one of them hits Godwin's gammon law and they have to start yet another thread.

This thread was created because the same discussion kept coming up in other threads. If you want to share your view about what it means to you go ahead.
