Social conservatism

All always you are choosing what you want it to be and interperate it to suot your values , while I am stating what it is, if any one of them you don't beleive, you are not a social conservative.,

Just like I agree with most of blanquism, I beleive in socialist revolution as a mass movement not a small group of intellectuals in a coup so will never be tied to that particular left wing ideology
I am sure you can appreciate that you’ve defined it as you see it and I am merely doing the same?

There’s no 10 commandments of social conservatism, there is nuance, just as there is on the left and how your views differ from other socialists/social democrats on here.

Opinions change too.

The socialists of 1950 Britain were pro death penalty, wanted limits on immigration and voted to keep homosexuality illegal.

The conservatives of 1910 thought whites were superior to blacks, and many did after this year.

Now, most conservatives don’t and find those views abhorrent. All of us disagree with homosexuality being illegal now.

People are very complex and ideas sway even within particular movement/ideologies.

The “father of modern conservatism” Edmund Burke was half Irish and thought Ireland should be independent of the crown. That rips up modern perception of the ideology and he founded it haha!

You don’t support a coup by a small group, you want to change hearts and minds but some do and are willing to kill for it. Do I judge you by them? Nah, course I don’t.

I actually completely understand why you have the economic views you do, I just slightly disagree and think a private market is better, but keeping the safety net you want.

What does it mean to you?

Do you identify as this yourself?

What policies would you like to see introduced?

Who are your political heroes (contemporary or recent past) in public life/philosophy/commentary etc?

Just a starting block for debate, please add your own questions and answers as you wish.

Personally, I see it more as a belief system nowadays rather than anything else. Some of my closest friends would describe themselves as socially conservative (going to an all boys grammar school, it was bound to happen!) and they’re some of the nicest and kindest people I know. Some of their core values have already been mentioned - strong bond to the church and family being the main ones.

I’m not socially conservative at all. Why that’s never made an issue is we do share similar thinking in each to their own though and as a consequence, it’s not something that influences their political stance or any specific policies they’d want others to follow, it’s more just the values they hold important for their own lives. As much as they personally are religious, they’re secularist in terms of their political beliefs.

Politics wise, I’m not sure there’s many socially conservative views that could be implemented as policy nowadays, I’m struggling to think of one.

ní throidann leathcheann ach a chuid féin.
Ok so it seems Google isn’t that compliant with Gaelic to English.

I think I got it.

Anyway, Edmund Burke, half Irish and a Republican, he founded modern conservatism and your country owes him a great debt, it certainly wouldn’t be a republic without him... so you are right, conservatives are your own ;-)
