He was hired because he was cheap and politically convenient for Woodward. If they hadn't given him the job when they did there is no way they could hire him following beatings from Barca, City and not finishing Top4 so they had to act. Because if they didn't they would be left at the end of the season with a load of players that haven't done anything for the best part of 2 years and having to embark on a long and probably expensive search for a new manager. As well as player in/out issues which they are ill-equip to deal with
They could beat City and go on to the top4 but given who is in the managers' seat, I find that highly unlikely
