Barcelona are a world wide brand, with tourists coming out of their ears.
But you couldn't find a stronger representation of Catalan identity than FCB.
This is exactly it - without suggesting we would ever be any where near as huge as Barcelona.
It is about balance - we will have our core support and the in my view the Soriano statement shows the club understand the need to retain that but as supporters of the club we also have to support our owners so we all have to accept the need to increase income to support the plans and growth.
They are not looking to generate the income from our pockets because they know that the income from around the world rises significantly following success on the field through the sale of shirts and other branded gear.
Success also attracts the best players and players that attract huge income on their own(typically Far East players) but the payoff (from us -the home supporters) for that is that there has to be some availability for the "tourists" or "JCLs" to get to the games for visits to our city for one offs.
These new fans or tourists bring significantly higher levels of income per head from premium match day ticket prices, the sale of souvenirs, tours, programmes, food, drink etc on their special day to see their new heroes and some of the best players in the world. We should support the club by welcoming them because these supporters bring the income needed to supplement the match day income from the home town support which is relatively modest amongst the worlds top clubs.
For me the statement shows we are getting it right and are looking to continue on the same lines. I do not believe that the club are trying to get rid of any of us, they are trying to maximise their income including testing the ideas on us with surveys and I have no problem with that whilst they continue to recognise that we are
Manchester City and the support that has been here for years remains the heart of the club.
