No it wasn't. There was only one player from the opposition team between Vela and the goal so therefore it was rightly ruled out as he was offside

That's why it confused me.

Can we expect to see that as a tactic in this WC now it's been done (albeit accidentally) once?

I wouldn't advise shit goalkeeping as a tactic to be honest!

Its still further complication to the rule though tbh, as far as i'm concerned it should just be if your ahead of the last man your offside. Never knew the goalkeeper counted in offside decisions till now.

But as the goalkeeper is last man 99% of the time that would effectively abolish the offside rule.

It's not a complication though, offside is when there is only one player between the attacking player and the goal. The rules don't mention anything about goalkeepers it's just assumed that they'll be the one who's between the attacker and the goal because they are positioned close to the net but incidents like this do happen every now and then just not that often
