Southampton (A) - Carabao Cup | Post Match Thread

Only positive I can take from last night is that we once again showed ourselves to be good losers. No excuses and complimentary of Southampton.
Chatting to Saints fans in the South Western Arms at St Denys after the game, they couldn't believe how well they'd played and I thought they deserved the credit they got.

Palmer is on a par with Kelechi and not good enough at the top level but could still have a good career elsewhere
Certainly has the talent, but for me he lacks the application. Sure his confidence is low and he had opportunities on Wednesday to take on the FB but didnt

We haven’t got a vinny kompany that’s for sure so the answer is none .
This may sound daft, but I see Akanji as a future captain/leader. He has so many similar characteristics to Vinny, is super intelligent and for me, already has a real presence when he is playing.

Can we at least be honest without it becoming a clappers v. flappers debate all the time? Pep almost always gets it right domestically, mainly in the Prem. He's also gotten it wrong more often than not in Europe. Simple facts. What fans care or don't care about is irrelevant. He's paid to succeed in both and those are the expectations of the club's hierarchy. Make no mistake about it, they want to be considered one of, if not, the best team in the World. You cannot be that without winning in Europe, at least sometimes. I'm hoping that sometime is this upcoming May.

Even considering Europe, equitably: I'm not saying Pep will be satisfied with the record, nor the players. We shouldn't be either.
But the plain fact is that the vast majority of clubs who participate in the CL/European Cup every year have never won it. A fairly small handful of teams have ever won it. Only one French team (Marseille) has ever won it. Only three German teams, (one of which was Hamburg, a very long time ago). Only two, ever, from Spain. England has of course contributed the most winners: United, Liverpool, Forest, Villa, Chelsea. We should be in there, but it's not a complete aberration that we're not… as yet.

To everyone slagging off Phillip's

It was his first start for us, he has had an ongoing injury since he signed so hadn't really trained, let alone trained with his new team mates, he gets fit (not match fit) goes away with England and doesnt play, he then comes back and takes a bit of flak from his new manager. Then in his first start it's in a system that is new to him, with other players around him played out of position and having bad games themselves. - so yeah he didn't play well.

We've heard this all before with Silva, Fernandinho, Cancelo, Bernardo, Mahrez, Rodri & Grealish during their first season or two, & now we've started on Philips AND Gomez!

I'd be more worried if our success or failure came down to one player. It doesn't. We've got a fantastic squad, but on Wednesday it was the WHOLE team who were out of kilter, not any individual player.

What I witnessed against Southampton was a mentality issue. We were already in the tunnel at Old Toilet wondering who our Carabao Cup semi-final opponents would be, & not focused on the tunnel at St Mary's & actually getting to that semi.

Not only were the team affected by the upcoming derby, but so was Pep & us fans. We underestimated Southampton by looking beyond this match, so got EXACTLY what we deserved, which was the square root of fuck all. Simples!

Gundogan was worse.
