Southampton (A) - Carabao Cup | Post Match Thread

Unacceptably shit. Again. Said in the match thread, it’s boring to watch. Like proper dull. And has been for weeks/months now. All for the sake of control and we’re not particularly doing that either. It’s shite.

We’ve gone from the most exciting team to watch - pace, high tempo, urgency, progressive passing, chances, creating, goals - to fuck all. Passing it backwards. Passing it with the ball rolling its way to its target rather than being fizzed in. Blunt. Dull. Boring. None of them seem interested.

We’ve got the most sought-after forward in world football up there collecting dust and feeding off scraps because of it.

Might seem reactionary because it’s just one game with loads of changes but it’s not just tonight. It’s been happening for fucking ages. It stems deeper than tonight. Something seems genuinely wrong and it wouldn’t surprise me if the players can’t be arsed with this new-found philosophy. I know I can’t as a fan paying hundreds to watch it.

Gomez can go. Cancelo can get to fuck - throwing his arms about like some petulant **** when he’s one of the worst on the pitch consistently. Foden needs to buck his ideas up. Grealish needs to start producing game-changing moments rather than what he is doing (I’m one of his advocates). Phillips needs to stop admiring his 5 yard passes and actually make an effort to show for the ball.
You may have a point.

Spot on.

Well done Southampton. Great press, especially first half. Attacked with purpose and got their rewards. Hope they can translate that sort of play into their league form.

We were appalling.

The defensive set-up in the first half was disrespectful to Southampton. Walker at centre-back is an emergency stop-gap and you can get away with it if the rest of the defence is solid. Putting him there and then playing both Cancelo and Gomez (both of whom are risky and not particularly defensively minded defenders, both of whom were on terrible form tonight) means you're playing with about half a defence. I hope Laporte gets a bonus for putting up with that shit.

The back line is also a fuck you to Phillips on his first start. He wasn't great (but is out of match fitness, at a club he's hardly played for, learning the specifics of his role) but it definitely didn't help that he was in front of that makeshift defence.

Foden tried but with little to show for it. Gundo had very little impact. Palmer showed the odd flash but very inconsistent. Grealish looked like he gave a fuck but didn't have much to offer. Alvarez hardly got a sniff.

The subs were necessary and offered a slight improvement.

Passing and decision-making were off all over the pitch. No-one comes out of this with any glory.

Dust ourselves off and go again.

Cancelo and Gomez both taking foul thrown ins, sums both up.

Utter dogshit.

Pep seems to have strangled the spontaneity out of this team?

We seem to care more about what the opponent can do than we can?

Buy a proper left back this window or end up with nothing this season.

£200m on Grealish, Phillips, Ake and Akanji.

These are not top shelf players.

Ake and Akanji have been good this season - Ake especially, and Akanji considering his cost. Bizarre to lump them in.
