Southampton (A) - Carabao Cup | Post Match Thread

Ortega, 4 - Beaten at his near post for the opener, caught miles off his line for the 2nd

Cancelo, 3 - Horrendous tonight, he's always bad at RB but seems to be in some kind of sulk since the World Cup
Walker, 4 - Not his fault, why did Pep play him at CB? Has he ever played there for us before?
Laporte, 6 - Well he didn't really do anything wrong, so...
Gomez, 2 - It's over for him, getting worse with every game he starts and is costing us more and more

Phillips, 3 - Clearly unfit and really needs to get up to speed or else he won't be featuring much before May/June
Gundogan, 5 - Clumsy sometimes but at least tried to get things moving through the middle
Foden, 4 - One step forward and two steps back for him this week, get him back on the RW, Pep

Grealish, 5 - Didn't really do anything wrong or right, felt like he could have stayed on
Alvarez, 5 - Tried his best tonight but snapped at a couple of chances he should have buried
Palmer, 4 - Really want him to succeed here but just don't see his development, if anything he's regressed

Subs:
De Bruyne, 4 - Hasn't been the same player since coming home from the World Cup, what's up with him?
Akanji, 5 - Well he didn't make anything worse, so he leaves the game with a bit of credit
Ake, 6 - Probably our best player, which says a lot because he was only on for 45 mins and didn't do much
Haaland, 6 - Tried to look dangerous and scared Southampton occasionally but was given basically zero service
Rodri, 7 - Re-organised the midfield in an instant, Phillips is no competition right now

0/10 the lot of them

Looks like Pep wasn't clarkieing the media after all. He lived up to his words "Tonight I will create an inspiration and do incredible tactics".

I’m honestly not sure you can put this one on Pep.

He can’t play the same 11 every single match with the schedule we have and he can’t stop 11 players from all having one of their worst individual performances in a City shirt at once.

And I don’t think the tactics were necessarily that bad, either. I know many are done with the inverted fullback setup but it has worked more often than not.

Not to mention the goals were both mostly down to individual errors / poor positional play. It’s not as if Soton had a bucket full of chances otherwise, either.

Really, that side should have been enough to *at least* compete with the Southampton side.

The fact they weren’t is more a reflection on the players on the night than Pep.

I am sure I’ll be in the minority here, though.
Pep had to save players for the Derby. The team tonight let him down. I am sure Pep has learned he can't count on some of them. Rico Lewis will start ahead of Cancelo for the rest of the season. Grealish has burned his bridges and Phillips can't be trusted. Shit happens. City will march on.

I agree and know what you mean, but it does feel like we are so far off from across the whole side at the moment. Not just a bad performance, it’s becoming the worst run of form I can remember from this set of players.

we all still have to remember It's still very early in the season and the fixture list is very tight as it stands.
so maybe take a bigger look at the games coming up and not having to play Newcastle or United twice

You are deluded if you think we played well before the World Cup.

We are second because Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs and United have all been piss poor.

Being second in a 2 horse race isn't an achievement
It is for the dippers.

As for horses, NEVER trust an animal that can shit when it's running...

Can we be totally honest and say that our goalie was totally to blame for the second goal, or can we say what a wonderful chipped goal ?
Be honest, would we be ranting what a wonderful goal it was had KDB scored it ??
A bad City goal to concede or a wonderful executed goal from KDB ??
What was he he actually doing on the edge of his box when the game was inside our half?

Maybe maths isn't your strong point, but by virtue of playing BETTER than the teams you've mentioned, we've more points which allows us to be second.

So, by default, we're "playing well" compared to those teams, non?

Maybe not "well" by our past form, but we had complete seasons to go by, not disrupted ones...

It was both.

Perfectly executed lob shot, which only occurred because Ortega forgot the match was still going on.
