Southampton (A) - Carabao Cup | Post Match Thread

That has to be one of our worst performances in a long time. I can only compare it to Lyon in the Champions League maybe, but at least that night we created chances and couldn't finish. Hopefully, this helps us kick on we seem to always get some crappy result against an out-of-form team or something each season and it creates a spark in us. I know we want to win all the trophies but the only positive is the fewer games in the season which will be helpful if we want to win the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.

Unacceptably shit. Again. Said in the match thread, it’s boring to watch. Like proper dull. And has been for weeks/months now. All for the sake of control and we’re not particularly doing that either. It’s shite.

We’ve gone from the most exciting team to watch - pace, high tempo, urgency, progressive passing, chances, creating, goals - to fuck all. Passing it backwards. Passing it with the ball rolling its way to its target rather than being fizzed in. Blunt. Dull. Boring. None of them seem interested.

We’ve got the most sought-after forward in world football up there collecting dust and feeding off scraps because of it.

Might seem reactionary because it’s just one game with loads of changes but it’s not just tonight. It’s been happening for fucking ages. It stems deeper than tonight. Something seems genuinely wrong and it wouldn’t surprise me if the players can’t be arsed with this new-found philosophy. I know I can’t as a fan paying hundreds to watch it.

Gomez can go. Cancelo can get to fuck - throwing his arms about like some petulant **** when he’s one of the worst on the pitch consistently. Foden needs to buck his ideas up. Grealish needs to start producing game-changing moments rather than what he is doing (I’m one of his advocates). Phillips needs to stop admiring his 5 yard passes and actually make an effort to show for the ball.
Spot on mate. Phillips was a liability last night. 0/10

Terrible from him last night, although he's not alone. I blame his over-tight shorts..
Loan him back to Leeds but I hear Leeds fans don’t want him. Loan him to Arsenal where he can do so serious damage to their premiership title challenge.

As somebody said yesterday, only Pep could put a full-back at cb when there are 3 solid cb's available.

Depends on what you mean by "available". Laporté played and Walker has played at CB before. I wouldn't have risked Stones or Akanji with the next upcoming game. Aké, I'll give you, but with Cancelo not playing very well, why would you risk him playing above the next game when Aké could cover left back then?

I see the logic of the back line was and I think Walker will survive the next starting lineup.

I honestly think that they had no interest in that game, Pep included. For the whole team to be so shocking says to me they were just not up for it.
Play the kids then and let the academy manager take the team. They are destroying teams and would have tried.

Your point about Philips is spot on - he doesn’t want the ball and at City that isn’t an option - you must want the ball. He is way way out of his comfort zone.

I was disappointed in Philips, too, but it's a first season and has been hit injury for most of it.

We have to be real here as it can take 18 months to bed in the position and directives under Guardiola.

Back from the game…it was a painful watch.
Credit Saints, they were up for it…..City not.
Too many poor performances, Cancelo, Palmer, Gomez singled out, even Ortega had a bad night with poor distribution. Seen some comments about our midfield but to be fair it was swamped - worked Hard but created nothing.
in the first half Grealish seemed our only attacking option & given he went off suggests he is playing Saturday.
To top it all, diversions on way home we’re pai in the arse.
Happy to forget this one quickly.

Well done for going all that way.

V. disappointed with the result but couldn’t help but notice Pep’s comments about ‘we weren’t the best on the night, we didn’t deserve to win on that performance, the best team won. No complaints just a bad night’…..now compare that to the likely comments from the red side of Merseyside had they lost to bottom of the table….he would have found something wrong, something to complain about and if you‘re lucky say something complimentary about the opposition.
