Southampton (H) League Cup Post-Match Thread

GMR is dire, I've had no options recently whilst working/driving, but to listen to it's horrendous commentary.

Tuned in mid match and they talked about everything else for up to 8 minutes before mentioning what was happening on the pitch. How hard can it be to talk about the match.

Frustrating and dire, GMR has died since cheesy left, used to religiously listen to the pre match, but rarely switch it on due to its poor content.

City need their own match day radio channel with stats and in depth commentary of what's happening ON the pitch.

GMR is a Luke warm attempt, it's a complete waste of time. It doesnt immerse you in the match, I often start swapping channels in the hope of finding out what's going on ON the pitch.

I had the misfortune to listen to some of the GMR commentary last night and yes it's really poor. Not really surprising from a station that sanctioned 'Talking Balls' though.

Great to see the youngsters emerging:-
Doyle was steady, he can tackle, good awareness of where to be and there was running pass through to Gabriel that was lovely.
Garcia is so composed, but this was no real test - would love to see him against decent attackers.
Angelino worked hard and there were some good crosses whipping in

On the other hand Southampton were awful - they brought a fair number fans and gave no effort other than to stay tight and try not to give anything away - its a cup tie, you want to show your fans that you have something about you - give it Ok - tackle, run, work, the opposition have a number of youngsters playing - put them under pressure. And as City fan who travels up from the Midlands - I would also prefer to see some opposition that makes game of it - until the last 15 minutes there was really nothing.

On the other hand, it may be that City's first half performance was so controlled, so composed that they really couldn't get near enough to make a challenge. Bernardo and Foden were everywhere - picking up every scrap, moving the ball well. The second goal was all about great movement and precision passing - a work of art.

The recent England women matches were just the same. We are subjected to an historical narrative about every player, more often than not it's one who has worn a red shirt at some time or played against them at some point, and then occasionally it gets interspersed with what is happening on the pitch, if anything is happening on the pitch(!). It is TV and so we can see all the elements of the game but there is little or no tactical or technical explanation. I shall watch and listen to less and less broadcast football. It is just turning into a verbal jamboree.

This is exactly like the last time I had the misfortune to hear Alan Green on five live commentating on us.

I agree about the BBC the problem for City is the rights are held by the BBC

That pic alone plus a comment abòut his other granddad would have been a good football/human interest snippet on the City-less BBC briefing mentioned above and the Breakfast sports news. The Haka and Xhaka seem more important plus the 'news' Liverpool play tonight.

Just heard the Five Live sports bulletin and this was mentioned with a snip of an interview with Tommy who said, he had asked Grandad Glynn for advice and was hoping Mike would be looking down on him

It really is a massive human interest story. I am into it. Trying not to be as I don't think it will help T.Doyle. Best to let him develop without hype. I do entirely agree though if he was the grandson of Bobby Charlton or Emlyn Hughes the coverage would be wall to wall. It's probably better he does without all that hoo-hah. Meanwhile, he's in the perfect place. It's really good seeing a group of young City players coming through at last.

I'm hoping we can wrap the Champions League group up, and get a home draw and these young players can get more experience under their belt.

Training game bar 5 minutes either side of the Saints goal.
They did enough though to worry Pep after scoring. It was pretty much an ideal night though. Angelino picked up what was hopefully a minor injury but will probably look back on the game with satisfaction.

Thought Southampton were scared to not concede another bag of goals in the first half which deflated the atmosphere a bit. There was no contest in the first half and it didn't feel like an official game.

We did well though. Think we'll have a group of 4-5 academy players in the squad in 2 years, and I mean academy players who play not only in the cups here and there.
