Southampton Thread - 2022/23 | Nathan Jones sacked (Pg 6)

You would expect to see an upturn in performance before the new manager comes in and someone takes a beating.

Feel sorry for who the play next...................bollocks!

:)

They seem a very unambitious club. They’ve been in the PL since its inception haven't they? Certainly most seasons anyway, and enough to surely accrue enough TV money and sponsorship deals to go for a manager a bit better than someone at Luton. Must be hugely underwhelming for their fans.

Why do clubs like Saints, Norwich, etc seemingly accept their lot and never try to seriously improve by speculating to accumulate, so to speak? If I were the chairman I’d be trying to tempt someone like Simeone or Mancini to take the manager job. You don’t get if you don’t ask, and even if turned down it makes players, media, sponsors and suchlike start to notice you for the ambition.

Or from the other viewpoint teams like this offer opportunities for managers like Potter and Howe to develop and move to bigger clubs like Chelsea and Newcastle.
Name managers often do not bring success - look at Everton.

I looked at their record last season. In their first 7 and last 12 PL games they got 9 points (1 win and 6 draws). That's nailed on relegation form over 38 games. Yet in the run of 19 games between those, they got 31 points, which is Europa League qualifying form. Absolutely bizarre.

They had 6 seasons outside the top flight, relegated in 2004-05 spending 3 seasons in the Championship before another relegation & 2 years in League 1. They then had back to back promotions in 2010-11 & 2011-12.
