As if last nights result wasn't joyous enough, it's always an added bonus to wake up the next morning to see videos of England fans getting slapped around Benidorm by some Spanish bouncers

England reminded me of any generic premier league team when they come up against a team like city

We have no bravery on the ball to play out through the press and the only way they can gain a foothold is by kicking it long

We’ve got no one in a deeper midfield who wants to take the ball and look forward with their next touch

It’s a confused mess , why play Foden if we are playing it long , why play Kane instead of Toney who is more used to getting on the end of long punts forward

Southgate needs to go but I don’t think we’ll be any better off with the type of managers the FA will look at as his replacement , will probably be someone like Carsley or Southgate

Would love to see what Pep could do with this group of players

England haven't won a thing for 58 years now. The problems run deeper than Southgate.

One of the possible reasons: intelligence (in particular) and technique are less appreciated than on the continent. Pep's stint in the PL is changing that, though.

The thing with intelligence is that it helps the team perform better, the players know how to deal with diverse tactics and styles, how to find each other, defend and attack collectively.

England has outstanding individuals who shine in well structured enviroments prepared by foreign managers. How many English managers work for the top 10 in the PL? 1-2. The paucity of top English managers speaks volumes.

Rodri was voted the best player in the CL, Uefa Nations League and the Euros - by foreign journalists and pundits. He didn't make the top 6 in England last season.
100%. It's no surprise with this newer generation of players, England have consistently progressed further compared to the previous batches. TBH Southgate deserves some credit, he is still the head coach after all, but it's not entirely down to him. The players now have better footballing education, valuation of technique and appreciation of football outside the box.

There was very little inventiveness in English football. Pre-Pep/Klopp/Conte, count how many teams were playing bog-standard 4-4-2s. Ferguson led the way for decades in English football. He was admittedly a great man-manager, excellent at adapting, but hardly a tactical revolutionist. It was either 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 with Ferguson, it's nothing overtly clever or out of the box. Even his change to 4-3-3 was because of Mourinho. It showed with his level of success in the CL compared to his domestic success. Pep absolutely schooled him in that 3-1 CL final.

I always stand-by the international sides (sides with a top league anyway) is a reflection of their domestic league, and right now, England is benefiting from cleverer footballing minds, and clubs more willing to invest in developing the technical aspects and footballing intelligence of youth players.

Unfortunately, most of the commentators and pundits still reflect the older generation of English football. They've little care or attention towards technical or intelligent play. I once saw a player (can't remember who) beat two men in midfield with a small dribble/nutmeg and the English commentator carried on with his irrelevant trivia. They just seem uninterested in anything that isn't a shot or a cross.

If the next manager has any balls he'll move on from Kane. Hell be 33 by the time the world cup comes and slower than Demicheles.

They were missing Pedri he isn't a slouch. Yamal is a precocious talent. Rodi isn't bang average either.

That's exactly my point Ray... No Pedri, Rodri only playing half the match, and their 'precocious talent' having a quiet game.

Last night's Spanish team gave a very average performance, yet they bettered England in almost every position on the pitch. At full strength, they'd probably have finished England off long before half time.

But for Pickford, England would have been beaten 4 or 5-1.

The best team in the tournament won it, under par, and without breaking sweat.

One of Pickford’s saves that kept England in the match was a direct result of his poor, long kick out.

A huge part of a keeper’s game now is to prevent chances from happening in the first place, not just saving them when they do.
