Forgive my frank comments but bollocks - a simple typo - the RAF work to July mine was a genuine mistake. I am sure you knew that.

Such a shame Dame Vera couldn't have lived to see just one more anniversary. Bless them all.

I had the privilege about 12 years ago of having this very discussion with a gentleman who had flown both in WW2. As I recall his basic summary was both were wonderful - the spitfire particularly so once in the air and seemed to be able to do anything. The Hurricane was much less fussy about its ground operating environment - very robust and could take off / land anywhere.
 
Hurricanes were used in the Battle of Britain to attack German bombers, Spitfires
generally flew higher to deal with the escorting fighters, the Spit could out turn
the Messerschmitt 109's and was more nimble than the Hurricanes, but the 109
was slightly faster. The Hurricanes were more able to absorb punishment, and were
available in larger numbers, but most pilots would tell you that the Spitfire, however, was
a beautiful plane to fly, so although I love both, it's the Spit for me.
