That's a great story, but how the negotiation went down is irrelevant. If Spurs paid players closer to what they're worth on the open market they wouldn't be in a situation where they stop playing some of the best players towards the end of seasons because Pochettino's feelings are hurt, and certainly wouldn't have to sell them to title rivals or occasionally lose them for way below market value like you will with Alderweireld next summer.
Spurs pay what they can afford to pay. It might not be as much as City can afford to pay but it is still more than all but 10-15 other clubs on the entire planet can afford to pay. Spurs will inevitably occasionally lose a player to one of the few richer clubs. No getting away from that.
