Spurs (A) | Post-Match Thread

Not going to be too hard on Ake.

Mendy unsettles the whole defense drifting all over the Pitch.

He is woefully shit, and i do not understand why Pep plays him.

I was hoping ,and still am that we sell Sterling. Painful watching him do the same fucking thing, time, after time, game after game. Get the Ball run at the Box A. Fall over. B. lose Possession C. Miss kick it. It is depressing we already had one season of it. Please God not another.

Even now, on the day after, I'm really not sure what to think of that. Lack of players....yes. Rusty....yes. Some parts were really good, especially the first twenty or so minutes. But after that there seemed to be no spark and then we tried to force it, which is never good. Spurs were definitely up for it and as some have already said, they bullied us a bit. We'd better get used to it this season as plenty of teams will try to do that.

When we have players back and start to click - and we will, this is only the first game - the ball will hopefully be pinged around and we will be difficult to live with. But.....boy do we need a clinical finisher, we should have been 2-0 up in that first half and out of sight.

Good points.....Grealish looked lively, Torres showed good movement although no end product and he faded a bit. Not so good......Mendy, chrit he had a bit of a mare and can't see him featuring much this season. Mahrez looked out of sorts and knackered (as he did in the Charity Shield) while Ake just looked nervous. Gundogan (surprisingly) and Sterling struggled as well. Absolutely pissed off we lost and the manner of it, but not ringing the alarm bells and trying to keep some perspective. No doubt it's a wake up call though.

We have a very strong squad, with the ability to bring in a "quality second choice" player if the number one choice is unavailable. Provided we have the main stay of first pick payers on the pitch, we perform with little disruption. However when we are forced to reduce the top rank by 3, 4, or more, then we lose the cohesion and that extra ounce of craft top players have.

Mahrez and Gundogan looking terrible in the two games played.
Hope they are not going back to 2019/20 form.

Just watched the game back again. We were so poor after the first 20 minutes. Don't think I've ever seen us give the ball away as much as we did yesterday. We could have been punished 3 or 4 times if Spurs weren't so wasteful. If we're persist with Mendy we are playing with 10 men. Probably one if the worst buys since the takeover. Yes he's had his injury nightmares, but so have other players and they have turned In good performances.

Harry Kane in a blue shirt and we win that game comfortably. He would have gobbled up the Mahrez chance from 6 yards and the Torres chance.

A decent win against Norwich should pit us back on track. And hopefully the likes of Leicester, Spurs, Everton and West ham can take points off the rags, Chelsea and Scousers instead of their normal belly tickle performances.

Excellent post . PG got it wrong today and the blame is mainly on him. I don't see how he couldn't have brought on subs earlier as well. But certain players should not have started. So he has a pride issue and needs to lose it quickly because the stubborn attitude is showing inwardly that he believes he never can admit making a mistake to himself let alone others. It's what we know and get used to. Humility is not a strong point.
In any case Zinchenko, Walker Stones etc should have been ready and played. We know our A team. That should have been played today. No excuses about pre season.
Agreed 100%. On the brighter note, at least yesterday confirmed who our starters should be. If we were at home vs relegation fodder, then fine, but we shouldn't have done what we did away to Spurs, especially when we've evidently a more competitive league this season.

We shot ourselves in the foot, & Pep has to realise that every time we've played a weakened team against better opposition recently, we've lost. This isn't the two team La Liga, or the one team Bundesliga where we can afford to rest up.

What excuses did Mendy, Ake and Cancelo have, certainly wasn't tiredness.

Horrible from so many but the glaring issue remains and a top striker would have made little difference today.

The defensive midfield is too slow when the ball breaks down.

Fern still sees the danger but his legs can't get him there.

Gundo, Rodri, nobody solves this issue right now, certainly when we want to front load the top half of the pitch.

Thought Grealish was a real positive.
Top post.

Fernandinho was incredible in the first half but got exposed in the second half - his legs can’t do a full 90 against top opposition anymore.

A mobile number 6 is an absolute priority, a long term replacement for Ferna.

We needed that far more than Grealish, who looks great, but we’re well stacked in that position.

Looked completely full on TV.

Not sure if it was quite full or not. We sat in the wrong row by mistake. I made schoolboy error of reading 6 as 9, which nearly gave me a panic attack when I came back from getting a couple of bottles of water during the first half. My daughter and I only got into the ground about ten minutes before k/o because we had decided to sit down in a chippy to eat and the bar was so rammed when we got in the ground... When I came back with the drinks, I went to the correct row and then couldn't see my daughter or any empty seats on the row we should have been on.

I did of course realise what had happened but it was a very strange moment or two.

We actually had two spare seats next to us on the row we were on but I think some rows had more people on them that seats so could be sure by sight if there were unsold seats; can't have been many though.

rusty, didnt click. First 15 mins was looking good.

The good - Grealish, trued and showed Raheem how to keep the ball and be effective, he will be a key player this season. KDB good when he came on, Fern showed why he deserves a contract. Some players where average though.

The bad - Mendy & sterling down that side, it was a ball give away all day long, to easy for spurs. When grealish got the ball down that side it caused spurs issues, had he had good support we would have done more damage. Now and again raheem had a brilliant run, but he needs to know when and how to pass once he has beaten 2 players. I think ederson could have made more effort to save the Son goal.

Torres, thought he would have improved more by now with pep guidance. There is a good player there for sure, but he drifts out of games, lacks a finish from time to time. If he coaches well this season he could be good.
