Yes feels like this must be the case - or they’re trying to manage his minutes prior to the busy season. Akanji played three full games over Intl break so if he’s playing another one feels like maybe Ake isn’t fully fit?

Ake, stones and kovacic would all be in for me if fully fit, but I strongly suspect all 3 aren't even close to being fully fit so no complaints with that from me.
