Had a quick glance at this thread last night, and in my view it was suffering from an excess of immediate post-match euphoria. Nothing wrong with that, I was suffering from it myself. And I can take that kind of suffering till the cows come home.
Sorry, but this is the way I saw it, and I tell it like I saw it.
Man of the match? Of the match? That is, of the full ninety minutes? It isn't Riyad. He had a marvellous second half, perhaps the best he's had since pulling on a City shirt. He played with aggression, determination, intent, intelligence. Hats off. But, in short, everything that he basically didn't show in the first half. He started well, had a lively first ten minutes, and I thought, “Oh great, Mahrez is on it tonight, this is one of his good matches”. He then faded, and became an absence in the rest of the half. Not getting on his case, he wasn't alone in that respect, far from it. But that is the truth of what I saw.
Man of the Match? Who delivered, from first to last, until he was taken off a few minutes from the end? Hands down, our astonishing eighteen-year-old. I simply cannot understand his level of maturity, his reading of the game, his 360° awareness of what's going on around him, his patient attempts to build attacks, his coolness on the ball, his alertness to danger and swiftness in picking up the man who needs to be picked up, at the age he's at.
My vote goes to him, without a second thought.
