Yup. The refreshing powers of relegation are over hyped. Just as many sizeable clubs suffer long term after relegation as are refreshed. Leeds is perhaps the latest good example: they had a high cost base and were missing from the top flight for 8(?) years. Still struggling.
 
It's a minor miracle that they've stayed out of the bottom 3 with the injuries they've had. Perhaps Thomas Frank didn't do such a bad job after all.

They and West Ham - which ever of them go down - will both lose every decent player and will have to rebuild on a shoestring budget, then become yo-yo teams if they get back up. Out of the 2 squads I'd only have taken Van Der Ven and probably Madisson in his prime, though we need neither at present, imho.

I think most City fans would cheer for the hammers in this battle. Come on you "ers!
 
There was a fantastic article by Stefan on his substack comparing losses west ham / Spurs will face. Levy had done great deals with relegation clauses in contracts & stadium financing but it’s still a £1b debt on the stadium.

I think he said Spurs turnover would drop approx £380, I’ll have to check to confirm but it could absolutely finish them. Maybe they can come back in 10 years & be told they have no history.
 
Spurs sort of resembling City at the end of the 82-83 season. Big club with loads of fans and a good history, a decent trophy cabinet, no relegations for ages, but falling on hard times due to poor management. It took us 25 more years and a billionaire takeover to get back to the top table. You wonder how much of Spurs' arse will fall out if they can't avoid the drop, given the overheads on that stadium as well.

Mad as well to think that if City had won the FA Cup in 1981 they'd have been competing for the Cup Winners Cup in 82, just a year before that relegation to Luton. Not too different to Spurs going for the Europa League in 2025 only to be potentially relegated in 2026. It really does all come back to that Son miss in 2024 and then sacking Postecoglu in 2025. There's no way he'd be doing worse with this set of players.

Over the years I have taken a lot of grief from the Spurs fans (and given it back by the tonne, of course), so in the event they go down I've begun stockpiling all the vicious one-liners I can gather - and then I will begin my one man campaign to remind them of our respective places in the football hierarchy...again and again and again.

A man like myself!



I've nurtured (lovingly nurtured) a 45 year grudge against those cunts. So,I'd be as happy as a pig in shit if they went down. Unfortunately, I think they may just survive. Can't see West Ham climbing above them between now and the end of the season.
