Stadium Expansion

just as well our owners have the confidence to make their own decisions about extending the stadium rather than rely on the nod of approval from opposition fans stuck in the past

Nah, the CPO is a good thing. They are not a stubborn bunch. They are pretty open minded as to what is ultimately good for the club. To be fair, they were put in place to save the club and the stadium from being sold to developers etc. It's not really in their interest to reject a move to Battersea or whatever to maximise our revenue potential. The CPO really represent the heartbeat of the supporters, and I think it's excellent that they can represent our views.

They're on excellent terms with Abramovic and Gourlay too.

I believe we sell out most of our away allocations actually (especially if the website is to be believed). Certainly every away I've been to except Boro away last season had a decent turnout.

On a personal level, I can only really afford five or six away's a year, possibly with a European away thrown in on top of my season ticket and attendance to all home cup and european games.
Nobody should be blamed for not turning out at that shithole!

didn't realise you were a chelsea fan...i could only be arsed reading the "fulham" bit.

Will make me sound like a bit of a Douche, but what did I miss there?

I don't think it a matter of confidence, there's an agreement as part of ownership of the club etc. I'm sure Abramovic and the Chief Execs we've had could do without the CPO, but there's simply no way around it as the club and the CPO are contractually bound for 100 years.

By the way, are you Russe on DLF?

You've completely missed the point there; Squirty was politely telling you to mind your own business as our owner is unlikely to give a flying camel what you think about it.

You're right about the CPO though. It's to be commended.

Oh god how did I miss that?! Of course Mansour won't care what I or other supporters think, nor should he. But, I reckon he'd consider expanding the stadium only when the time is right, purely because of the amount of empty seats for most of the lesser games. Take your games against Bolton and Stole for example. Relatively unimportant but you pulled a crowd somewhere between 39,000 and 42,000 at a guess. That'd look pretty silly in a 70,000 seater stadium.

Would Mansour care? Debatable, but i'd hope at the very least he considers what makes business sense. I.E surely he doesn't want to lose a load of money on expanding the stadium too early? I know he's loaded and everything but surely he has a little common sense?

I know what you're saying, and personally I don't think there's much need to expand anyway. But there seem to be quite a few on here who want to see an expanded stadium but think the club should wait a few years before doing it. That isn't really an option in my mind.

Any work on the stadium will involve a huge amount of disruption and reduced capacity. As such, the club will want to get it done ASAP because the last thing they want is to spend their first title-winning season in a ground that has a building site at one one end and a load of regular fans missing.

As I said, I don't really think the ground needs expanding, but if that's what the club decide to do, they (quite rightly) won't hang around before implementing it. They'll build it and then figure out how to fill it (and they WILL fill it). Love it or loathe it, that's just the way the UAE's "build-it-and-they-will-come" attitude works.

Hypothetically speaking, if we were to commence the expansion at the end of the season and are going for the rumoured 60k with bigger North Stand, how long do people think it would take to complete?

I am sure our owners are savvy enough to keep the reduced capacity down to a minimum whilst the work is carried out but would it be feasible to complete the work by the start of the 2011/2012 season which would give us a full season plus two summers?

this is what i think
if they could start at the close of play this season they could finish it for the start of 11/12
by asking for dispensation to reduce the away allocation it wouldn't affect regular supporters at all, just the ones who go to the 'big' games

isn't there 7 months of prep work going on around the stadium starting in may?
would that have to be complete before any expansion?

i thought the prep work was for the back of the East Stand for the 'leisure complex-hotel-sky tower- theme park-race course-f1 track'

you might be right squirty, but those underground workings could be all over the place

i hope they are going to extend it at the end of this season
if they leave it until we are winning things tickets will be in huge demand due to the decreased capacity for a short while, then prices will go up

a season ticket in the right place is a wonderful thing :-)

When I first heard about the North stand expansion I was a bit sceptical - I tend to like the stadium feel we have ( I hated the later day Maine road with its different designs (most of them bad)) and a big f*ck off stand can look awful - look at the Kippax or Elland Road.

But I have faith in the owners doing it properly - I'm sure (no I hope) the roof line will not be higher than the CB and East Stands - and a big single tier home end could be just what the stadium needs to bring it to life.

Hopefully we will know more soon...

Main Road was bigger so why not, there will be alot of cockney rag prawn sandwich boys jumping ship to us when we are at the top, will need the extra seats so us real supporters can get a bastard ticket.
Maine Rd had a smaller capacity than COMS, when we win something and the attendances go up it will be worth it, for now better left.

I think Bluemooner is refering to the days where Maine Road was standing and we could achieve 75'000
