Stadium Expansion

So if England won the world cup then only the swamp and wembley are equiped to stage quarter finals as we stand at the minute?
Emirates and millenium stadium will also hold games

So realisitically they are the 4 venues for the quarter finals and I doubt that will change no matter who builds what really. Not saying it is pointless expanding but to do it for the world cup probably is.

Are You sure the Millenium stadium can stage games in a English World Cup?

See my previous post John. There is nothing that states QFs can only be held in 60K+ stadiums. And the Millenium Stadium will definitely not be used, what with it being in a different country.

I'm absolutely certain this is changing. I believe that all QFs will be held in 60k plus stadia from 2018 (possibly 2014) and, although it's possibly not written down, I'm sure it will happen.

Similarly, UEFA have been tightening up their rules on stadia capable of holding their club based finals. Although COMS staged the 2008 UEFA Cup final I understand its capacity is currently too small to stage future Europa League finals.

I do think increasing the stadium simply for the possibility that the ground 'may' hold a q/f for a World Cup that 'may' be held in England is not the main driving factor (if the Club are seriously looking at increasing the capacity). But staging a QF would add a bit of glamour and would help cement the stadium's place in World football.

You know what your talking about - so do you reckon that the World cup could have any baring on Liverpool's new stadium plans?

Do our owners worry about building stadiums that are too big?

Here's an article from this week about football in the United Arab Emirates. It says that last season average attendences were 2,120 with most stadiums having a capacity of 12-14000 - and that was apparently with most tickets free!

I remember seeing an astonishing thread on here a while back about all the construction projects in Abu Dhabi - if we know anything at all it's that they don't worry about things being too big. If part of the attraction of City is that we promote the Abu Dhabi "Brand" worldwide then I doubt they'll skimp on the stadium and do it bit by bit.

ps. Barcelona have on average 25000 empty seats a match and they've been looking at expanding too!

I have been told, and it might not be true, that despite empty seats at Barca, the majority of them have actually been sold. Season ticket holders pick and choose their matches there.

Surely being a world cup stadium is not that big a deal, and certainly not reason alone to expand your stadium.

You may make a couple of mill and get a little bit of presige, but noone would spend tens or hundreds of millions just for that.

However, the reason Arsenal spent an absolute fortune moving to their new stadium and effectively stopped themselves winning trophies for a number of years, is that for a Champions League club to be self sufficient they need a big capacity and loads of corporate customers.

That's why we are looking at it, I assume.

I wouldn't be suprised if Livpool don't get a bit of financial help. Villa and Forest are also increasing their grounds. Sunderland and Newcastle grounds will be used as well me thinks.
