Star Wars - Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker

Palpatine is my favourite, or at least one of, my favourite characters in the Star Wars Universe. However, he cannot and should not come back in a physical form in The Rise of Skywalker.

If he does, it essentially ruins the entire plot arc of the first six movies. The rise, fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker. If the Emperor is to return, then Anakin's sacrifice was all for nothing.

But, then, that is essentially the problem with this entire sequel trilogy. What's the point in it? It's all very much the same. An all powerful Empire (see First Order) against a plucky band of rebels. I saw a really good suggestion a few months ago, that this trilogy should have been about a challenge to the legacy of what Anakin and the original heroes had set up. For those that are aware of the Legends content, something like the Yuuzhan Vong.

My idea for this trilogy basically would have been Luke Vs Leia. Politically it would have similar to the northern irish situation. I imagined after the battle of endor that the empire did not fall, it fractured into 2/3 separate armies. Because endor was such a cataclysmic loss of leadership I imagine a few admirals/generals would have claimed themselves to be next in line to palpatine.

So these imperial factions would have fought each other while the rebellion would have grown it's armada again. Eventually the rebels would sign a peace treaty with one of the factions, this peace brokered by Luke. The terms being that the faction could keep its systems in return for helping the rebels liberate the other systems. Together they would have destroyed the other factions. So for the first time in two decades there was a peace. But not everyone agreed...

Leia would have been severely opposed to allowing an imperial faction to survive. After witnessing her planet destroyed she promised herself she would fight to the death to rid the galaxy of imperial rule. After the peace treaty she set up a guerilla unit, similar to the IRA, and continued to fight the Imperial Faction, much to the annoyance of the Republic.

That would have been the backstory. Leia would have been the antagonist, not the bad guy. I want her motive for going to war to be relatable.

My favourite character was always Jar Jar Binks. But apparently that's not ok.

It wasn't in the 2000s but now it is ok to like him. Personally never saw what all the hate was about. Sure he was in practically every scene but he brought some liveliness to the movie.

Mind you I was 11 when TPM came out so I was probably the target audience

Canon allows for palpatine to have survived, albeit badly injured the RotJ plot(you never see him die afterall), his galactic star destroyer was shot down over Jakku not long after Endor, and Jakku was suposardly home to Sidius's secret labarotory.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rey turns out to be a product of some cloning experiment to bring him back and his force ghost/essence possess such a clone. Hence her dark side persona on the trailer.

Even pre disney a lot of the old canon had palpatines return in them.

And he was the secret second Sith Lord

It wasn't his Super Star Destroyer that was shot down over Jakku. It was its sister ship. Palpatine's cruiser, the Eclipse, was sent to the Unknown Regions shortly before his death on the Second Death Star, as Palpatine's droids and computers had finished their calculations that had found a way through the storms and other obstacles there.

That was the point of Jakku, Palpatine intended that if he died then the Empire in its current guise could not survive. He tasked Gallius Rax with assembling the entire Imperial Remnant on Jakku where they would battle the New Republic. The Laboratory on Jakku enabled the entire planet to destroy itself; thus destroying Palpatine's Empire and the New Republic.

Of course, Palpatine did survive a lot of pre-Disney, but, importantly, it was never his physical body. It was always his ghost / sentinel. This allowed Anakin's redemption arc to still stand. That is why I don't think the Emperor will be back in physical form.

Aye you know what I meant, with the eclipse, been a while so was sketchy onthe details.

Also as I said Rey may well end up possessed by sidiuos force ghost or whatever, I don't expect ro see hin in full physical form.

I didn't know it was canon. To be fair, there is a lot of canon material that would still be a reveal to most.
Actually, thinking back on it, this is the biggest problem with Disney Star Wars. To know a lot of this stuff, or fully understand the movies, you have to read books and comics. To me, at least, that is the sign of a poor movie.

This is the way star wars has always worked. To me Disney are continuing to operate star wars as Lucas did. I know it sucks if you can't afford to buy the other stuff but it does enrich the story.

Not sure you have to. I know a fair bit of canon (not a lot but watched Rebels and Clone Wars plus I read a couple of the novels - not a lot, I know), outside of the average fan, but you can still appreciate the film's without that knowledge.

I'll hold fire on what Disney have done until ix.

Talking about canon and extending it to include theory, have you watched any of the Urban Acolyte videos on YouTube?

Well, he has, apparently, been consulted quite a bit for ix. Great storyteller but I hope he has had no input into the script. He's responsible for some horrendous dialogue.

Think I've watched a few, but I generally watch channels like Thor Skywalker.

Obi Wan: "Anakin, the Chancellor is evil."

Anakin: "From my point of view the Jedi are evil."

Shakespearean.

I'm not sure. For example, the novelisation of The Last Jedi explains that Rey is as powerful as she is because she downloaded all of Kylo's training when he was reading her mind on Star Killer Base. With all the Mary Sue stuff about Rey, I think that revelation is quite a big one (and shit reasoning) to have hidden in a book.

I've now watched the entire Skywalker series in the space of about 10 days.

My first rookie mistake was thinking the episodes were numbered in the order they were released. So I watched the Phantom Menace thinking it was the first ever Star Wars film. I didn't look at the year it was released, so I spent the whole film thinking 'this seems a bit modern for a 1977 film'.

Anyway, I finished Episode 1, and then went back to the start and watched Episode 4 and continued to watch them all in theatrical release order.

I don't know what the general consensus is about the films, but I feel like the story never really reached the heights of the original trilogy. The prequels were terrible, but the sequels, although clearly better, also fall way short of the originals. Revenge of the Sith was probably better than any of the final trilogy though, so the prequels has that going for it. Force Awakens was pretty good, but it got progressively worse with each subsequent film and now I kind of wish I hadn't bothered with any of it.

4, 5, 6 were great.
3 and 7 were pretty decent.
8 and 9 were bang average.
1 and 2 were genuinely awful

All six of the new ones are shit. The only good one that felt anything like the originals is rogue one. That is very good.
