I received a letter from DWP last week confirming that my state pension will rise by 10.1% beginning in the new tax year 2023/24.
The actual yearly amount was out by £10 , according to my own estimate calculated by increasing my current state pension by 10.1%.
Then I realized the extra £10 was the Christmas bonus that all state pensioners get in early December.
This dates back to 1972 and was implemented by Ted Heaths Tory government. It was a nice Christmas bonus 51 years ago,as the state pension then was £6.75 a week,so it was at minimum an extra weeks pension. If it has increased with inflation it would be around £140 today.
I had honestly thought that it had been scrapped years ago,and was surprised to find an extra £10 from DWP in my bank last December.
And instead of paying for the whole of Christmas (like in 1972) it bought 4 Christmas cards for my grandsons.
