Sterling’s contract - three year extension confirmed

If this is just about money then I'm confident he'll stay. However, I'm a little worried that this isn't about the money but rather him wanting to go the route of Beckham and Bale in moving to Madrid.
Which is fine, if I was playing for Chelsea I'd jump at the chance to play for Barca or Madrid. As long as if thats the case he doesn't string us along so he can get paid more. If that's what he wants he should say so and let us sell him or even sign a one year extension with a buy out clause.

I’ll say this once more.

I believe Sterling wants to stay, for which there are several excellent reasons.

I believe City want him to stay, for which there are several excellent reasons.

Asking for parity with KDB is just a negotiating position.

There’s a load of room between his current salary and KDB, and that’s where the two sides will settle.

Result? Raheem Sterling will remain top of the league.

Until he leaves

Problem is that if Sterling gets top dollar, then Sané will be looking at the same thing. Where does it end?

There has to be some differentiation between the very best players, the next level players whom one hopes will take over the mantel, the other players who fill out the squad. For me, Sterling isn’t in the Aguero, Silva, KDB strata today, but the problem is the maths...

If this is all about adding £5,000,000 per year to his wages on, say, a new 5 year deal, that’s an additional £25,000,000 to a reported current £175,000/wk or about £9,000,000/yr...or over 5 yrs a total(ish) cost of £70,000,000.

So, the question boils down to “Do City want to give £70,000,000 to Sterling?”

Conversely, City can try to reap a transfer fee and bring through a new player, use Mahrez as his built-in replacement, or spend untold £££££ on a new player, who probably cannot be much younger to get in the team, or possibly even cost less than what you would spend to keep Sterling for 5 years.

Big money problems and decisions I’m glad someone else has to make, but I think Sterling would be crazy to leave City over a couple of million quid given what he already has and will make regardless of whether he gets every penny he wants or what City are willing to offer.

Ye of little faith ;)
Well I'm in that camp.
Make our final offer if he refuses try to sell him (I am fully aware how hard and messy that may become) if he plays hardball drop him and play Mahrez.
It will be costly but it will avoid a wage spiral like the rags are suffering.
The club have already adopted this no nonsense approach over transfers and would at least send a message out that we have the same approach over wages.
Good luck to Sterling winning more things and being loved at any other club.
Sterling is a good player and may go on to become a great but he is still not big enough to hold us to ransom.
The longer this goes on the greater the risk he tarnishes what he has at City.

I doubt he would go to Spain due to the criticism he is receiving in England. As in Spain, it is much worse, even Pep says the same.

The racism is also worse there and the fans are unforgiving. Miss a sitter or even a 1v1 chance for Barca or Real and boos will ring the whole stadium. The media would destroy him. Perez is known not to like black players. Essien is the last one Real had and he was only on loan there in 2013. Before that it was Diarra. They’ve had others but have barely played like Adebayor.

I think he’ll sign.

Don’t see him going to Real. Barca will have Messi another few years. Raz is not a #9, and on LW they have Dembele and also Coutinho featuring both of which they have paid £100m+ for. Don’t see him going to PSG in the farmer’s league. Bayern won’t pay his fee or wages. Always said he wants to stay away from London so don’t see him going to Chelsea.

Seems Raz is being fair in not asking to be the best paid. To be honest he deserves to be up there, only Aguero and De Bruyne should be in front of him. He is producing the goods and creates danger every single game. Pay him what he is worth and get the deal signed.
Aren’t Marcelo and Casimero black?

I could understand your rancour if he was acting the twat. But I haven’t seen evidence of anything other than him playing a hard negotiating position.

Can’t imagine Real Madrid are even that attractive a proposition right now, deep in the bog of rebuilding. Would be a turbulent time to join at the least

Never said he's being a twat.
What I said was we should hold our position Sterling and his agent may think they hold all the cards but the club has a hand to play.
City are now too big to be bullied by any player.
The club will not be able to stop the fans if they perceive Stirling is being greedy.
We have managed without KDB we can manage without Stirling.

You didn’t but you did seem to imply it. If not, I apologise.

I do agree we need to hold a firm line but am more sanguine than you about reaching an acceptable compromise.

Sterling is bullying the club now?! WTF lol I swear some of fans are having some screws loose up there

Yet again......Sterling

He was as important as any other player last year and is doing well this year. Don’t know why we’re risking an £80mil+ 23 year old homegrown player for 30k a week. Sign him up and sell him on.

I have 100% faith in our management, but it’s baffling to hear rumours of Ake for £40mil or going for Jonny Fucking Evans, but are balking at a few million extra a year. How much would a ready-made replacement be? One that scores/assists 20+ a year and can play anywhere across the front 3.

I get we don’t want to end up like United and give £195k a week to a player who barely plays, but even Arsenal give Ozil £300k a week.

Tl;dr - Give him what he wants.

Ozil getting £300k per week is arsenal's issue not ours, we have a wage structure that currently works, we shouldn't f**k it up because others are idiots.
I think letting a great player leave for next to nothing and paying through the nose for a replacement, instead of budging £30k or whatever in wages is the bigger mistake.

We’re going to have to pay either in transfer fees or in wages to a player who’s been great for us despite all the stick. I know which I’d prefer.

Yes, but over paying him will cost more across the whole squad pay structure.

I'm of the opinion it'll get done to suit all, but if he's determined to go (which the club possibly already know), then there is no point offering stupid numbers to try to keep him, he's good, but I think if its necessary, that we'll replace him with similar potential, and Mahrez is already here, and isn't much of a step down, if at all.
