Sterling’s contract - three year extension confirmed

He contributed massively to our last season and is one of the main reasons we kept our winning momentum going in the early stages of the year with his consistent late winners. He needs to produce another season like that to be considered on the level of Silva and KDB though and sadly, despite how good he has been in the last 12 months I still always have this nagging doubt when I watch him play whether he'll ever be genuinely elite. Whether he is a proper player. I think another strong season would put a lot of that to bed. He is out of order right now though if he is asking for DeBruyne wages off the back of 1 good season. I don't know the whole story though.
I don't think he needs to elite just fit the team and he does that very well
His agent is doing his job, we have no idea what raz is thinking,it'll get settled i'm sure

I think a few people on here think this process is a lot more adverserial than it actually is. Aside from overly dramatic language in how some of the press report it (probably because there's not really much of a story really), there's no evidence that anyone's trying to hold the club to ransom or that the club are taking an especially hard line stance. It's just how these things work. All of our players have agents who will try to secure the best deal for their clients. Both parties can still respect each other and be keen for a solution to be found, but it's also normal that each will try to find a solution that maximises their own outcome.

TBH, of all high profile players that have moved in recent years, I think Sterling actually came out of his move to us with some integrity. Most players sign a new deal to up their salary immediately and then force a move anyway. He didn't do that at Liverpool. He was up front, didn't take a quick pay rise and then try to leave. There's no evidence he's money grabbing or disloyal.

As has been mentioned several times, it's quite normal for a player to wait and see if they can push their stock any higher before they enter into a negotiation. Other players have done it, including ones in our current squad. In fact I'd say they'd been poorly advised if they didn't do that. He was brilliant for us last season and whilst he didn't do enough at the world cup to push his salary up to the highest level he was hoping for, his club form for us means a solution probably lies somewhere in the middle. If it isn't found, then fine, he'll be sold.

Also don't understand why so many people bang on about how much the club has stood by him. He hasn't done anything wrong during in his time with us that warranted us "standing by him". Sure he's been victimised by the press and other fans in that time, but i don't think that unfair treatment should be used against him by his own employers and fans now that we're negotiating a contract. City didn't buy Sterling as a favour to him. They got him because they thought he'd improve our squad and help us win things, which he has. He doesn't owe City any more or any less than any of our other players. It's great for him that City put faith in him and provided a platform to win things, but the same can be said of all of our other players too. I don't see why Sterling should be expected to be more grateful than any of the others. Stop holding him to a different standard to everyone else.
Thank fuck, some sense at last. I was going to post exactly the same thing but couldn’t have put it as well as you did. I salute you sir

Great post. So many folks are going dipper on the lad.

The bottom line is he deserves to be paid as much as someone is prepared to pay for him. He's done very, very well for us and if he ups his game a bit more then - to me - he will be worth the money he wants. If not well he wont be. City are good to their players - if they do the business they get the reward so my advice to Raheem is sign up for another two years at least . You know the club will look after you.

He’s deluded if he thinks he deserves De Bruyne wages and status! Scored a lot of goals yes but besides Southampton and possibly Bournemouth the rest were Tap ins set up by the rest of the team!

Fucking hell, mate, what a load of horseshit

No one will pay Sterling 250k a week and he better not let his agent burn his bridges here because this will be the best he ever gets unless China comes calling. I'm all for him asking for the most he can get but he also has to assess the market and be honest with himself or he could end up having to settle for less if City decide to cut ties.

Speaking of which, what is it lately with players in their prime torching promising careers by going to play in China. I understand older players going there to get a final payday. We've seen Hulk, Oscar, Carrasco to name a few. Players good enough to get a payday anywhere in Europe. Maybe not as much as in China, but even given a footballer players short career, enough to live comfortably on. Surely at some point you've got enough in the bank or enough coming your waythat money is not the sole motivating factor. What about leaving a legacy for the sport or for a club? I don't know maybe I'm just a naive romantic but I'd like to think at some point you are earning enough or can earn enough that your thoughts turn to other things.

Very rarely runs down blind alleys when playing for City. The first part I agree with but he's getting that from Arteta and showed improvement in this area last season.
£170,000/wk for a work in progress, but he’s not sure it’s enough?!

I’m not one to spout paychecks, because it’s what the market will bear, and you are only as good as what you did yesterday, but it beggars belief that he (or his advisors) think they can get that kind of dosh anywhere else, or that he is Silva, Aguero, KDB level...at the moment. What he needs is an incentivized 4 year deal with stepped up pay that rewards continued improvement. Giving ANY player a fat new multi year deal based on the one time, best season of his life, is not prudent.

In the twilight of your brief career, money is about the ONLY thing that keeps you doing the work needed to be able to compete on a high level. Many of these players see China as that, possibly before you see it for them. It’s amazing how well you sleep when your bank account goes from 7 figures to 8, or 8 to 9.

Fantastic player that has come on leaps and bounds since we signed him.
He deserves an improved contract and he will get it. I look forward to seeing him play for us for many years to come.
