Sterling and the hate he gets

It's pretty straight forward regards last night.
The shit house element of the country who have been digging him out for years will try and paint him as a coward etc for not stepping up whilst the Sane amongst us will appreciate he had a fantastic overall tournament but wasn't one of the managers picks to take one of the first 5 pens.
I agree.
It just seemed to me that everyone, the media, fans etc even some of my non-City supporting mates, were dying for Sterling or Stones to fuck up, so they could pile on and blame them for something.

I'd be surprised if Sterling didn't want to step up and take a penalty last night.

Given his recent track record though, you can see why Southgate may have decided against him being in the first five.

None of the players should be abused for taking one and missing or for not taking one.

This is the elephant in the room.

Thanks to the Premier League academies (not the FA and St George's Park) we now have an emerging generation of players that rival any team in the world. But Gareth Southgate is not the man to mould that group into a winning team.

The silver lining from this tournament could be that Southgate and the FA realise that and we hand the job to any competent English manager (Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, whoever). But I suspect we will need to wait for after the next World Cup to see the back of Gareth.

This is so true. It's worse than Martinez managing Belgium which is saying something

I'm glad Razza didn't take a pen. If he had any time to think about it, he would have put his foot through the ball and it would have rolled to the 6 yard line and stopped. Keeper could have nipped off for a ciggie and he wouldn't have scored. He's no Penalty taker.

How unusual though that the media is talking shit on a s

I mean, the media are the media but that first paragraph was hardly a ringing endorsement or defence of the lad was it.

I expected Sterling to be taken off with the tactical change penalty takers coming on. Was surprised and said to Mrs Hoghead at the time that I hope Sterling doesn't take a penalty 'cos he'll miss.

Forget the one he smashed into the top corner to win the Carabao at Wembley?

What are Grealish and Sterling supposed to do, overrule the manager who has picked the penalty takers? Imagine if they had done and missed…
It seems Grealish did nothing wrong but Sterling should have 'manned up' and taken one regardless of his managers wishes.

Funny that..

Exactly, I can't imagine for a single solitary moment, Southgate and/or his staff didn't watch any penalty taking and just took a guess at who should take them, they'll have watched and noted it all and for a myriad of reasons, gone with who they felt best suited, regardless of name or status.

not convinced Sane agrees with you. One of the reasons he left is cos he thought he was better than Raheem

Only Sterling can not be the one to miss a penalty in a penalty shootout but still be the villain. Only Sterling can win a penalty that is confirmed after a VAR review to get his country to a first final in 55 years and still the general consensus be that it was not a penalty at all.

How he copes is beyond me, it's fucking exhausted me just to watch it happen to him.

I dont have any problem with Sterling not taking a penalty yesterday as I've already said, but I do wonder if he's going to be happy going the rest of his career as a guy who just doesn't take pens? He's only 26.

I think if I were him, I'd tell City to go out and find the best penalty coach in the world if they exist, or if not have a club analyst go out and breakdown the technique of some brilliant penalty takers and then spend a few hours a week with a coach and Steffen or a youth keeper just learning a reliable technique of how to take them.

Penalties are a skill, and if you dont have that skill you can go out and learn it. Practise, practise, practise. Build up some confidence on the training pitch and then take some for City.

Sterling is in the unique position that both City and England need more penalty takers. He could add 10 goals a season to his game if he made himself a decent taker. City would love it, England would be better for it.

The other thing is England should stop giving Kane every penalty in qualifiers when they're 3-0 up vs. Bulgaria. Let others take a few penalties and get used to it.

This is the penalty record of England players

They've got until November 2022 to get more players confident enough to step up. Kane isn't going to gain anything from taking more. Give them to Sancho, Foden, Mount, Henderson etc.

Very probably been mentioned somewhere else but Sterling took an excellent penalty for City to win the League Cup in the shootout against Chelsea.
This however was when he was having one of his best spells for us.
Southgate appeared to have decided who was taking the pens beforehand but still wonder how Sterling would have reacted confidence wise if he had to take one last night . This knowing not only the inevitable abuse he would get from the media because who he is if he'd not scored but also the pathetic racist abuse the players who did miss did get.
Some people are just basically so blinkered when it comes to him. Someone at my work (armchair Rag) thought he was terrible against Denmark. Said person however also didn't know who Phil Foden played for (seriously). This wasn't a huge surprise as when Stuart Pearce was City boss he said he used to enjoy watching him at United. I had to point out that he may have been referring to Stuart PearSON!!

I've been trying to rack my brain but I can't remember an occasion before where a player who didn't take a penalty gets more grief than those who missed.
Not saying its never happened but it must be rare and only happens to certain players for reasons only kown to the accusers.

When Portugal went out in 2012, everyone blamed Ronaldo for putting himself 5th in the list. They ended up going out before he took his penalty and loads of people criticised him for not taking an early penalty.
