Steve Coppell

I bumped into Coppell a week after he left.

He was in an off licence in Purley, Surrey. His flash car had COP 1 plates.
I walked in and he was smiling and buying some expensive whisky.

I turned round to him and said your plates should read cop out. I then started having a pop at him and was escorted out of Victoria Wine by the staff

Felt a bit embarassed afterwards but glad I had vented as IMO he should never have taken the job on.

Going back to Brian Horton, many years of ale has messed my memory but wasnt he announced as manager on a friday night game against coventry

He was. I remember while everyone was protesting afterwards that someone told me Horton was the new manager. I told a few of my mates and they were all like "Yeah right. Anyway, who's he?"

With no mobile phones and stuff in those days (and no Pink Final on a Friday night lol), we didn't really get proper confirmation of it until we got back in our local later on.

I thought Lee sacked him and replaced him with Brian Horton, a nice enough man who was given absolutely fuck all help by City and, ultimately, was letf with zero chance of avoiding his, and the clubs, inevitable fate.
Definitely not. Reid was sacked early in the 93/94 season and Lee didn't take over until early 1994. I remember we played Blackburn at MR and lost badly and there was a big anti-Swales demo after the game. Swales did his usual trick of sacking the manager.

Let's not forget the involvement of our dear friend John Maddock in the sacking of Reid ;)

I'll never forget following that season from here as a 10 year old. Crazy, crazy crazy. Five men taking charge of the first team in one season, ridiculous!

At the end of the previous season, I was more than hopeful that we'd storm to promotion in first place, regaining our rightful place in the top tier. It was pretty painful to see Bolton manage that achievement, especially given how far behind us they finished the previous season.

Doesn't feel all that long ago, but there's been a world of change since!

Thats how we know it definitely wasn't Lee who sacked him. Swales appointed Maddocks and his first job was to sack Reid and appoint Horton. That's when we had the infamous phone call to Radio Manchester of Maddocks 'driving south' the appoint the new manager and everyone thought it was Venables.

Saying Purley is part of Croydon is like saying Hale is a part of Wythenshawe.
