I don't think you need to understand comedy to like any comedian.
Over the years I've belly laughed at Chubby Brown, Ken Dodd, Bernard Manning, Charlie Williams etc as much as I have Lenny Henry, A Kick up the 80s, Naked Video, The Dangerous Brothers, Tracey Ullman, Alexei Sayle, George Cralin, Bill Hicks, The Mary Whitehouse Experience, Frank Skinner, Jimmy Carr, Frankie Boyle etc.
If you are into that sort of thing, of course you can appreciate the craft that goes into what a particular comedian is doing, what they have written and the delivery of the gag/story but ultimately for the individual, it simply comes down to the fact it either makes you laugh or it doesn't.
There's no kudos to be had by liking one comic and not another.
In my opinion, Stewart Lee is extremely funny but accept others might not like him.
