I'm afraid to say but Lescott is just not good enough for where we want to go.

Don't get me wrong, he's good in the premiership but doesn't cut it in the CL.

Personally, I'll take Vertonghen over Hummels. He is a better skilled player. Perhaps not as athletic as Hummels, but has better ball skills, and will improve us in more areas and thus overall.

I don't know what all the fuss is about with vertonghen.
I hate having a centerback who got a reason for going forward, in this case vertonghen loves to get forward, it might cut it in netherland, but i dont think it will in the prem.
Hummels is young and makes the odd mistakes once in a while, but he has one of the best football brains for a player in his age.
In my opinion Hummels would be perfect for us.

i know.if we want to be one of the top teams in the world we need a top CB partnership in the back.eg real madrid have pepe and ramos,barca have puyol and pique,the rags have vidic and ferdie. in my opinion we should have a partnership of Vinnie and Hummels.

Notice the commonalities in those partnerships.
1) One is really tough and hard, the other is skilled. And by skilled, I mean CM level skilled.
2) Kompany and Hummels are similar players. Vertonghen will be our Pique. Silva, Ramos, Rio. While Komps will be our Puyol, Vidic, Pepe! That is why we should get Vertonghen.

P.s: Vertonghen doesn't have a penchant for going forward. DOn't know where you got that from. At least, no more so than Ramos, Pique or Thiago Silva. But he has an amazing passing touch, fantastic ball control, he is a dead ball freekick specialist (of the Alex variety) and great on set pieces with his head. He is pretty much Vermaelen without a little less grit and a bit more skill and size.
He is what we need, not Hummels. Who granted is a good defender in his own right. But doesn't have the X-factor that will propel us to the Barca/Real category. ANd that is where we need to go.

That is the last piece in our puzzle.

And then in the summer some sick speed/skill combo. Right now we have a lot of great passers, thinkers, grit power and movement players. But we don't have that cutting edge speed dribbler guy yet. Someone with skill and blazing speed- Hazzard/Neymar/Reus or someone of that clout. And then we can rest for the next 3 years as we chase CL and the league. :)

I agree, he was certainly on the radar in the summer and we spoke to him so hopefully we'll return in Jan.

This all day, can't believe the amount of clubs that have been linked with him. Very, very mediocre defender, nowhere near top 4 quality.

I think Cahill is a capable defender. He really is an inferior Kompany. Calm, Controlled, aggressive and with some ball skills. Just coz his team sucks doesn't mean he is shit. He isn't/ But he is no Vertonghen :-)

I was watching Schalke vs. Bremen before from the other week and Schalke have a defender called Benedikt Howede who looked impressive and similar to the highly rated Hummels. He's also club captain and is in his early 20s. Any views on him as I haven't heard much hype about him and he is getting capped regularly by the Germans now. Germany are producing an unbelievable amount of top quality young players.

BTW Raul is still amazing too, he scored a hattrick.
