Also lived there most of my life, but avoid the town centre like the plague. Or at least I used to until my work decided to relocate there. I remmeber when they announced it all to us in a big meeting, half the rom burst out laughing and the other half were waiting for the puncline. We did a Stockport Quiz around the town centre to get to know the place, and one group ended up going home early after being confronted by some drugged up woman for cash, believe she tried to make off with a handbag or something.
For me, I live 6 miles form our new offices as the crow flies, yet would have to sit on a bus for 50 minutes, or leave extra early to go into Manchester and out to get 2 trains, to get to my office. Not really feasilble with young kids. Or can jump in the car but that also takes 25-35 mins in rush hour, and costs a fortune now anyway.
I also believe that our lease is coming up soon and the rent is about to go through the roof because Stockport is so up and coming (just ignore the derelict shops!), so we could be kicked out anyway.
Don't get me wrong, Stockport in places even in the centre has a great vibe. The marketplace, the little museum, the Plaza, great places. It's probably comparable to Macc where I have also lived to be fair, mostly. But I'm admittedly very sore from having to move there for work under obvious lies from my company to appease the masses, such as international guests can get there easily on public transport, the centre is as safe as houses and Merseyway is a vibrant hub. The investment has been stuttering for decades and any plan to revitalise it always seems disjointed.
