Stoke post match thread

You guys do realize about 13 of your 26 players are 30 or over the age of 30 right? Playing 2-3 games a week is asking a lot from them and this was bound to happen + you have no depth in the team. Sterling and Silva were being played down to the ground it was clear Sterling need a little rest from his last performances, as good as Silva is he's 31 and needs a game to rest as well not to mention you have 5 games from Sunderland to Liverpool in the span of 14 days. This season was always going to be transitional period, Pep has already showed a glimpse of what he can do and whats to come, there is a reason why everyone gets the hint that he may stay longer because he knows it'll take time, he won't be able to achieve everything in 3 years.

Relax a little.

Congratulations, but you're wasting your time, some people are never gonna get it. It's incredible! The shallow approach of the average fan never fails to amaze me, never! We're not like discussing sophisticated tactical concepts here, it's facts ffs. I mean you watch football regularly, you're supposed to know rotation is common practice for more than 2 decades now. It's merely down to observation ffs, haven't you noticed? Actually rotation is one of the major characteristics of the modern era, following the modification of rules, the upgrade of European competitions etc. And there's a fucking good reason for that. I remember back in early 00s' a Gus Hidding interview discussing the subject as an absolute must in modern football. Which should make you think how seriously it influences managers' work. For decades, and regardless of their tactical plans, they worked with like 11, 12, 13, 14 players max. Even substitutions were not allowed. Nowadays they are obliged to develop chemistry between 18, 20, 22 players. That is, if they do have that luxury, having such an amount of competent personel at their disposal, otherwise they're fucked, otherwise they need to lower their ambitions. They will also have to design masterplans to meet a busy schedule, which are modified day by day taking into account stuff such as injuries, form, strengths - weaknesses of opposition ahead, etc etc etc. Asking themselves questions all the time, how will that particular line-up match the demands of that particular game against that particular opposition instead of another, and so on. It's a totally different ball game these days, extremely complicated. I wouldn't expect all fans to go that far, but how can it be possible that some people still fail to understand the complexity of the fitness factor? That playing every 3 days inevitably influences your physical condition levels, and, as a consequence, your performance. When we are talking about the PL ffs, the most physically demanding league on the planet...

A couple of comments adding to your excellent post:
1. If Guardiola did not feel insecure, he would have rotated more in the Huddersfield match, especially in midfield and attacking line. As a consequence, more of our key players would be fitter for both the Sunderland as well as the Stoke matches.
2. If he trusted in his bench, Sterling would not have been fielded vs Sunderland, and Sane would not have started vs Stoke. By the way, last time he did not rest Sterling when he should, the boy picked up an injury, and the team missed him badly for a while. And when he did come back, he needed some time to find his form again...
3. Instead of blaming Guardiola for benching Silva and resting Sterling, if some people were not that ignorant, they would actually question the manager for exactly the opposite. For the real question here is, why does he not rotate more and more often, why does he not rotate as much as he should? Why does he feel insecure? You're capable enough reaching that question, than maybe, just fucking maybe, you'll start thinking about the limitations of that particular squad. And maybe, just fucking maybe, you'll start appreciating what he has achieved so far, already having established an extremely demanding philosophy, and competing against clubs such as:
- Chelsea: No European duties, Conte with the luxury of fielding the same starting 11 each week. Feeling comfortable enough to sell, I repeat, to sell (!) players such as Oscar and Ivanovic, making good money in the winter transfer window...
- Liverpool: Also no European duties, already out of both Cups, currently 4th (but with Arsenal 1 match less, so they could be 5th)...
- Spurs: Failing big time in European competitions, out of both the CL as well as the EL...
- Arsenal: Out of the CL with humiliating defeats, out of top 4 as we speak...
- United: Competing in the EL, not the Cl, Mourinio managing the most complete squad in the league, yet only 6th as we speak...

We're not even close evaluating the above mentioned realities. Instead, there are still people blaming Guardiola for his policy in that League Cup match, which took place in the week City would have to face your team for the CL group stage. And, for your information, there are still people debating whether Guardiola is better or worse than Pelegrini or Mancini. How about that? That is OUR reality...

So trust me when I'm telling you you're wasting your time, idiots will never understand, no matter what you or me or any other poster says. It's a lost battle. If they could understand, they would not be idiots, now, would they? Simple...

PS. Congratulations for your win yesterday.

Although it was obvious how Silva transformed our play, and in hindsight you can say he should have started, it should not be like that.

Last season when Silva was absent, KDB stepped up and some people were saying he's an upgrade on Silva.

It was not a crazy decision to rest Silva and to expect KDB in his preferred position, to be able to do a job. However, he's been in rubbish form lately and barring his crosses which are still excellent, he's gone to pieces. We need him to control games like this; not give the ball away endlessly.
As I said it was a piss poor decision before the game, it was evident throughout the first half, and very disappointing that it took an hour to rectify. Also disappointing is how little tempo and urgency we displayed in the first half hour of the game, putting so much pressure on the last half hour of the game, again. I don't understand the rationale behind that

Ridiculous side?? Are you for fuckingvreal?
Only navas was what most would call an inferior player, so if you think that makes the whole side inferior then god help you.
One draw and all the usual suspects come back out of the woodwork, clown ffs, for resting a player.

He dropped Sterling who's our best player and refused to change the side early in, Yaya and Dinho were in a weird pivot that didnt benefit anyone.

Well we had 12 shots on goal and only one of them was on target.

Irrespective of how they played individually or how the gameplan was formulated by Pep surely a tiny amount of the passing accuracy the team is built around should be used to shoot on target ?
Passing the ball around from man to man seems to be easy but hitting the ball between goalposts eludes those who try to score.

We lost our winning run because the manager was a clown who played a ridiculous side which offered Stoke a massive incentive before the game even kicked off. Pep's team was awful, and to compound it he didn't even have the bollocks to change it.
the manager did change it,had the bollox to change it and his changes worked, unfortunately the chances we created we didn't hit the target ,as for calling the manager a clown, shut up coco

when a player receives the ball he has 360 degrees to pass, players are making runs to give him space,we are very good at it,where as scoring, why the fuck am I explaining why scoring is harder than passing.

I actually thought when I saw the starting XI that apart from Navas we looked decent, though I was disappointed Stones wasn't in the side instead of Otamendi, but to be fair Ota did ok.

It was our attacking play that was off, we definitely missed Sterling, but Sané and Kun have been on fire and with Kev should have had enough to see off Stoke.

I think what Pep was surprised by was how poor Kev was last night. He's good enough to turn a game but he was shit yesterday apart from one or two brief moments. We missed Silva for sure, but a team in our position can't drop standards by so much with one player missing. We'll need an absolute top draw world class signing to replace Dave when he finally hangs up his magic boots, because right now he makes us tick, he's on a different level to the rest of this league and it shows.

Again, poor finishing didn't help, but it just wouldn't fall for us, those chances at the end, if only one had gone in. We need to learn from this and leave Navas out and start every game on the front foot, no slow passing and probing. Just give it Sané, Silva or Sterling and tell them to attack!

I´m not posting about scoring simply about shooting accuracy.

Surely the size of goalpost area and the fact that it is stationary is simpler to at least hit that area than passing a ball into the path of a moving person where speed of pass, direction and guesstimates regarding contact destination need to be computed ?

Improve shots on target and at least we give a goalie something to do.
Nobody instructed the shooter to hit the ball, he elected to do so but either he had no chance to hit the target in which case why shoot or he missed the target.
