Stones shouldn't play for England until the World Cup | Called up again (pg13)

He should concentrate on extending his professional career as a top Prem player and to do so he has to retire his England career.
Otherwise I fear his whole career is at serious risk in fact I still am inclined to believe sadly it already is
This is probably his last chance to have a sustained run in any team to prove as much to himself let alone anyone else that he can manage his fitness

We need to manage his game time, and he needs to manage his game time.
He is world-class, but his body is not. It needs to be protected as much as it can be.
That means that he should be rested in cup-matches.
He should be subbed off when we are winning comfortably.
I want him to stay. I think he is as valuable as Rodri and raises the game of all those around him.
A player like Khusanov could not learn from a better player - in ability, nor tactical nouse.

Who are we to say when a player plays for his country or not? Any player not just John Stones.
I know if I were talented enough to play for my country I would be proud and honoured to be chosen.
Sorry, like all of you, I do not want him to be injured and to play every game for us but I can’t ask this as he is the best player for the job.
That’s not just wearing my Stones tinted glasses, that’s me trying to be fair to the lad.
But we pay his wages and he never plays simple
Retire and get a new contract or move on

Can’t really force him not to play if he wants to can we boys
Absolutely not, but you'd think he'd have the common sense to admit that by playing more games, he's more likely to get injured

Pep could be a prick and not play him all season for City, and then he'd probably not get picked for England

Should just be a honest, sensible, grown up conversation, with the outcome being that he doesn't kick a ball for England until the World Cup

He needs protecting from himself and I hope that club officials are making that clear to him. He's our best centre half by a country mile and, with the exception of St Vincent, probably the greatest we've ever had. The difference when he plays is palpable

Blue tinted specs aside, not sure how sensible it is to not have him familiarise himself with Tuchel and his tactics and his teammates and then rock up and start in the World Cup.

If it wasn’t a World Cup year, in what is probably likely to be his last World Cup I’d understand the shout a bit more for him to retire.

Who are we?

Bless you, Eccles, but the club pays the salary the makes his life what it is whether healthy or injured. So with his overall dismal health records and form for coming back from international duty injured and undiagnosable injuries last year, he owes the club better than only managing his injuries on club time.

Great post. I think he should only play one game a week maximum. We really should be able to beat lower half teams without him. We could do with getting another defender to replicate his pushing into midfield. Akanji tried last year but not with the same quality. I wonder whether Gvardiol could do that job now we have a proper left back.

City paying his wages has nothing to do with whether he should be playing for England though.

Stones has actually been injured a number of times playing for city as well, not just England. Should England demand that city limits his game time?

If he’s fit he starts for city and england

That’s funny, I could have sworn he was on the team sheet yesterday and 10 people voted for him as MOTM! ;-).
I hear what you are saying and I do understand but it’s a dilemma for him, the club and England management I guess.
After all it’s prestige for the club to have International players. Ah well luckily I don’t have to make the decision. I can just watch from the sidelines. ;-) :-)

He's so good, so of course we're all concerned about possible injuries. But we don't actually know what the situation is, it could be that we've got to grips with his issues and (with management) he'll manage pretty well.

If that's not the case and Pep's permanently crossing his fingers, then he certainly needs to give England friendlies and games v minnows a miss.

Ficks me right off this. Ingerlund / FIFA don't pay his wages. It's all very well if you are the sort of player that can put in 50-70 games a season, but stones can manage 20-30 so needs to prioritise (imho).

He’s not a city fan. His commercial value is international. Same as Vinny and Kev.
He might not have started as a City fan but he gives every impression of being very attached to the club.
He refused an offer to join Arteta at Arsenal when he appeared to have limited opportunities here.

Equally he's probably very proud to represent his country and World Cups come near to the high points of any players career particularly if they do well in them.

He's clearly very well paid whatever happens and I'd be surprised if pride in achievement for both club and country don't completely supercede marginal changes in wealth for him.

These are England's upcoming games:

6th Sept - Andorra (H)
9th Sept - Serbia (A)
9th Oct - Wales (H) - Friendly
14th Oct- Latvia (A)
13th Nov - Serbia (H)
16th Nov - Albania (A)
2 Friendlies in March 2026
2 Friendlies in June 2026

England beat Serbia and they're all but through.

So 8 game before the season ends and 2 straight after. I would say only 1 of those Serbia games is necessary and that's assuming Serbia are perfect from now (they wont be).

Stones, like most others, has contracts and sponsorships linked or financially enhanced by his participation as an international player. Therefore he's not going to reduce his earnings potential by retiring early.
