Stop fracking

Not sure what you mean about risk not equalling outcome. I can understand the cost argument against nuclear power but the only nuclear accident where there was a significant loss of life was Chernobyl and even those deaths were small in number when compared to numerous mining disasters, oil and gas rig disasters and other industrial accidents related to energy generation. The death toll attributable to Three Mile island and Fukushima were zero. I know the clean up costs of Fukushima are huge but I would count that as part of the rebuild following the tsunami.

Its quite simple - the world (apart from Japan now because they got burnt) is happy to accept the risks associated with nuclear power - so why is fracking such a big f*cking deal for some people?
NIMBY'ism can be the only reason (as per anything that people perceive would lower the value of their properties)

Thought you were arguing against nuclear power due to risk not equalling outcome. Agree with you on fracking, we should just get on with it as long as the regulation is in place and fit for purpose.

The way our energy demands are and the technology that is available, it isnt a case of which method of production should be used, they all need utilising to varying degrees.

I am not against fracking, but it needs to be done respectfully and carefully in consideration to ecosystems and wildlife. As Grunge said, the fracking itself may be under ground but all the equipment to under take the work isnt and not all potential sites for fracking are brown sites, it would be a shame if greenfield sites and the natural biodiversity were ruined to extract the gas from under them.

Nope, they want to build a fracking site on a nature reserve near Warrington. There have been a bunch of protesters camped on the edge of the site for over a year now to prevent them from doing it.
How do the protesters manage to do that and hold down jobs?

there's always a small surface footprint which upsets NIMBY's - someone will work out if that footprint is significant in terms of the nature reserve and its purpose...

[generalised sweeping statement mode=on]they don't. you and I are paying them through the benefits system as they are allegedly looking for work.[generalised sweeping statement mode=off]

The protesters are probably more harmful to the environment than a fracking rig would be with their camp fires, bongo drums and smelly incense sticks.

Thats the thing, there's plenty of other places around there that isn't a nature reserve that would work just as well, there is even a concreted area that neighbours the nature reserve they could put it on but would probably have to compensate a company to do it.
