Bayern absolutely destroyed Barca a couple of years back using a two up top and often use Muller in an advanced role. Atletico Madrid played two up top much of the time last year and won La Liga. We ourselves won the league playing two up top. Juventus trounced Serie A using Tevez and Llorente up front.

Every major league in Europe was won by a team who plays with two up front either as their main system or as one which they often switch two.

There is this fashion to say things like "the 4-4-2 is old fashioned" which is totally bollocks. Formations and styles aren't the be-all and end-all of football and there's no right or wrong way to set up. Look at the difference in how we're playing this and last season and we're playing the same formation.

Saying that a certain formation doesn't "work" is like saying that a certain musical note doesn't work. It's just daft and the obsession around a set of numbers describing where players stand on the pitch is just puzzling. I genuinely blame FIFA and Football Manager for this type of stuff.

With Bayern:
1) they had technical strikers who dont lose possession and are both intelligent. Dzeko today compromised us in a lot of dangerous positions.

With Athletico:
2) work rate, 2 really hard working CMs. A counter attacking system where everyone works their socks off and built on defense. We simply dont have CM's or even WM's of these type.

442 itself inst to blame, its the way we play or use the personnel in this system combined with the tactics that is costing us

You pick a formation to suit players we have. 4-3-3 shores us up.

433 for toughest of the games (as we really only have 1 DM and 2 CMs if not counting lampard), 4231 (or 4213 will Silva dropping slight deeper) would do for 90% of the games (and we have the personnel for it, even 2 players for every position). The side today after jovetic came on is the way to go, with one of Nasri, Milner or Navas on the right and either of the Ferns alongside Yaya

Re: Stop the 4-2-2-2 and go with a three man midfield, PLEAS

we don't need two up front with the midfield options that we have

4- 2- 3- 1

and we all know who the 1 is

Systems all have strengths and weaknesses but they ultimately depend on the players you pick. 4-4-2 can work with the right players but Dzeko & Aguero as the 2 never seems to work very well plus Yaya Toure isn't really equipped to be one of the middle two of the midfield 4.

It really is as simple as that.

Drop Dzeko for Fernando. 4-3-3. Try to keep a settled backline and build on that.

Absolutely
Especially away from home.

Well in a ideal world you would buy players that fit into your specific system, I feel like this is where we went wrong. After the take over we just recruited players haphazardly without considering what system and what style we wanted to play. We keep buying 4 strikers without having the midfield players to play a 4 in midfield.

I'd say our front 6 at the moment needs to be:

-----Fernando-----Fernandinho-----

----Milner-----Silva-----Jovetic-----

-------------Aguero----------------

Spot on. When we changed it on about 60 minutes we dominated, fair enough we still conceded a goal but if we had started the game with that formation it wouldn't have mattered.

We would lose control with that line up. The tottenham game was very close to this lineup.

For counter attack and playing bigger teams I actually think this is better than having Yaya at #10 and 3 in midfield. He doesnt work a lot for that to be an effective three in central MF.

I would still play Yaya with one of the Ferns because he would have help from the extra midfielder in front of him instead of Dzeko who is badly out of touch.
