Stop the world i want to get off moment

sitting in maxim's de paris in 1978 aged 14
(posh school trip)
our french teacher ordered,
"plat du jour tout le monde"
i took one bite of it and called the waiter over,
"qu'est-ce que c'est"
"cheval"
i've never (knowingly) eaten meat since that moment.

Serious question (not a criticism I promise). How did eating horse differ from eating beef in terms of informing your life long aversion to meat?
A curious vegetarian.

i suppose it was because i love horses very dearly.
i'd never known a cow personally, so hadn't questioned it.
it dawned on me in that moment that if i found it abhorrent to eat a specific animal, but not others, it would henceforth make me a hypocrite.

there are some people who would eat any animal
& fair play to 'em, at least they are not hypocrites.
but could the vast majority of meat eaters happily tuck into a cat?
in vietnam, before cooking them, they kill cats by drowning them in boiling water.
