He alluded to exactly what I've heard about his exit: he wanted to sign a new contract but mark Hughes and his staff felt his attitude was wrong so he wasn't offered one.

What a fuck up by the tafia.

Played really well and deserves congratulations for not celebrating and not rising to the abuse. i feel there are some ex players who really dont deserve it. Distin didnt either. Time to stop booing him, I think. We should never have let him go.

Even SWP got some shit when he first came back, having single handedly carried us for a couple of seasons. I can't remember how widespread it was across the stadium but I remember being deeply disappointed at the time that a significant number gave him grief.

Dickov got some abuse when he came back with Leicester, IIRC went down for a 'soft' penalty and scored it, some people booed him going off when he got subbed!! I'd have Sturridge back, although not sure he would fit with our system - would you rather see him or Sinclair warming up???

Yes, Dickov got loads of abuse/booing, mainly because he went mental when he scored. I don't know why anyone was offended by an opposition player celebrating a goal and I don't know why anyone expected anything different from Dickov who showed when he was with us how fiercely competitive he is. I think the whole "not celebrating out of respect" thing is tedious tbh, I don't expect many agree though.

Remember being at Blackburn and sturridge saved the day with a goal and a great ball to Robinho for a last minute equaliser.

God Hughes was shit. Biggest mistake the owners made was keeping him too long.

Many players over the years had said they've scored goals against their childhood club or a flu they played for and have a great affinity with and they're gutted when they score. Obviously being professionals they play as well as they can against them, they are being paid to do that, but when a goal is scored it hits home.

This. It's embarassing seeing fans at most clubs getting all precious when a PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER is happy that he's doing his job well. I personally find it a bit patronising - I appreciate Sturridge's nice comments about city but I wouldn't have given a shit if he'd celebrated with his teammates in front of the Liverpool fans either.

It's almost as cringeworthy as fans of English clubs slowly believing that highly paid foreign players are 'mercenaries' for furthering their careers at other English clubs . e.g. RVP to United or Nasri to City and that they 'belong' more to their original foreign club or owe them something for 'taking a chance on them' - what this really means is clubs felt the player was undervalued in his domestic league so exploited the situation.

Can't we save our boos for those who deserve it - those truly horrible examples of people and footballers. Ferdinand and Rooney spring to mind.

That's fair enough, if a player is really so gutted to score then of course he doesn't have to celebrate. But for it to be an basic expectation that players shouldn't celebrate a goal against a former club is ridiculous. That is more or less the situation that we have now. Personally, I never think it is disrespectful for a player to celebrate a goal against a former club. I expected Dickov to celebrate, wasn't remotely disappointed that he did and it didn't change my attitude towards him at all. I was only disappointed that City were absolutely poo that day.

The only club I believe players should not celebrate against is either the team they support or the team which academy they came through.

My opinion of Sturridge went up the other day by his reaction after scoring. He could of celebrated after scoring but he obviously respects all City have done for him which is bang on IMO. Also he probably realises that some of the fans only boo him because they are jealous.

I wouldn't expect players like Gaz Baz to celebrate against Villa or Silva to celebrate against Valencia just out of respect for the club that gave them their chance.

But I also agree that watching players like Milner not celebrate against Villa is daft.

After the way the fans spoke about him after he left, I think he'd be entitled to go fucking mental.
