Suarez - banned for 4 months (page 74)

Big names = Big money in merchandise and PR

They might not get all their money back - that would be a bit too optimistic, but a mega signing each season keeps their profile high, sponsors love it (although Suarez might be a little less than usual), fans love it, and shirt sales get a boost too.

And, it's not as though they are signing slouches either. These are big name players who can play! - it's rare they buy out and out flops - the worst case is that someone wasn't as successful as they'd hoped with a poor 1 in 4 goal ratio or so!

How well Suarez will fit at Barcelona is anybody's guess. He's not going to be the main man, that's for sure - even if he outplayed Messi, Barca fans would be biased towards Messi (I expect). Much like if it came to Suarez vs Gerrard, there's only one winner in Liverpool fan's eyes.

Liverpool fans are like most others - for the moment, it's all about hanging on to Suarez and sticking two fingers up at bigger / richer clubs. The moment he goes, it will have been the right time and he served his purpose but had to go.
The 'moral' victory will be how much they get for him. The LFC fans have set out their stall at 80m and no less. That's their moral victory threshold.

Best of luck to 'em.

Messi + Suarez could be a marriage made in hell. Or it could be sensational. Messi + Suarez + Neymar ? Cant see that working

Yeah, too many cooks.
It's tricky enough at City, but those three can't possibly all work out. Well, I hope not!

Goal machines don't want to give up their goals.

Worst case scenario for Liverpool is that they're stuck with him, unable to play for what is effectively the first half of the season (if he's not allowed train during his ban) and without the money that his sale would bring in. If they fall out the top four and bomb in the CL then they're in a mess. Probably better to get rid now and get replacements quickly.
I know where in a bit of a pickle with Yaya Toure . But at least we don't have a player that's banned from Football , for half a season . Its going to be hard getting big money for the serial biter .

Barcelona apparently really, really, really want him.

I don't know what's with the big two spanish names and their hard on for "names". Barcelona never used to be like that, but now they're just like Madrid...Ozil then and Sanchez now were hardly surplus to their needs. But that's their model, we all know what it is.

As far as Suarez, I don't think we'll be devastated. For me it'll be "thanks for the awesome season last year and for helping getting us back into the ECL!" that's about it really. I'm nervous as to what happens last season. We could do a Spurs (though they're purchases were more unbalanced and simply poor--and even then in the end did they do THAT badly?) or we could be like United (I don't mean winning the league, but they still seemed ok in the league when they lost Ronaldo).

Honestly we've gone through this before in the not too distant past losing Torres--it's only 3-4 years ago that he was a really good striker for us. Any team other than you, the big two in Spain and PSG will always have to deal with the real danger that their best player will be off. It's all about taking care of other parts of the club.
If you could do a deal with Barcelona including a swap for Sanchez that would be a great footballing move for Liverpool. The danger is selling Suarez and not getting quality replacements in.

The Liverpool fans I know want rid. He's a ticking time bomb

I'm all for having a bit of a laugh at their expense, and I'm more than happy to criticise some of the crap they've been involved in, but I'm not daft enough to actually believe any set of fans is a particular 'breed'.
Whilst I accept the thrust of what you're saying there are palpable differences between sets of supporters. Are you seriously saying that MK Dons and Millwall supporters are 'cut from the same cloth'?

Well...

Yes, if you move onto the next level and start to consider if some cultures / clubs attract a certain type of fan. Which I do believe is a factor. Like City fans are often slightly pessimistic - is that because we've watched them for so long, or something about the club that ties in with our outlook?

But then it's starting to get very deep about fan culture and particular clubs, but still, there's a fair mix of fans at every club ( but you might have a point about a general trend! )

I just hate it when other fans make assumptions about me as a City fan, or 'us' as a group. City fans are this, or that etc. So I don't really like us doing the same to other fans. All this 'proper club' and 'proper fans' - it's proper crap!

I don't think it's right to say that City attracts pessimistic fans per se; it's just that we had 30 years of shit to put up with until HRH Sheikh Mansour took over. This inevitably made us pessimistic.

The next generation won't be (or shouldn't be) pessimistic at all, as they will see the team (hopefully) going from strength to strength. For example, our grandchildren have been to about 15 games between them, but have never seen City lose. They're not going to have to put up with the dross we've experienced for the last three decades, therefore, they won't be pessimistic about our chances. At least, not on a regular basis.

It will be interesting to see who blinks first. Obviously barca want a knockdown price and victimpool want top dollar.

Not sure why anybody would buy him with his discipline problems.

With Barca and Real it's like Fifa, they buy who they want regardless.

Yes but the generation of fans we are now starting to attract are choosing us because we are winning, so you get a different breed.
It's a chicken vs egg problem.
It's not saying all City fans are pessimists, it's just pondering if certain sets of fans DO have some common traits, and if those traits are brought about by watching the team, or was it those traits that made them choose the team.

A lot of young kids seem to jump onboard whichever team is winning (and that's understandable), but some choose the underdog team. That might be something to do with the nature of the child. Then what happens when the underdog team becomes really good (like City) or the once amazing Liverpool become very ordinary - do you end up with a load of spoilt brats moaning all day because they can't win, or a set of fans who are used to losing, and are still coming to terms with winning things - and still create a tense atmosphere even when we're 2-0 up!

Make that 4 .0 in injury time!! I always think we should at least hold on for the draw
