Summer of 2003

we signed

Geert De Vlieger Free
Ben Thatcher £100,000
David James £2,000,000
Steve McManaman Free
Claudio Reyna £2,500,000
Antoine Sibierski £700,000
Paul Bosvelt £2,000,000
Trevor Sinclair £2,500,000

What a summer!

I think De Vlieger got injured against Wolves away Friendly in 2004, and had played in Bury away 0-0. Wanchope was then sold for about half a million which then paid for Watterous.

James was 2004 as stated, Bosvelt was a nominal fee about a tenth of what is stated I imagine.

We signed David Seaman on a free during the summer of 2003, to replace Peter Schmeichel after the Dane decided to retire having spent one season at the club. Unfortunately, whereas Schmeichel gave us a very good season, Seaman was a disaster. He got injured in January but should have been dropped long before. I think that both Keegan and the player were happy to use the injury as an excuse for him to retire, giving him a respectable way out of the whole unhappy episode.
