Summer Transfers

We have the EDS for longer term players, but with Bonucci we get an experienced player who is a proven in the Champions League and will help with John Stones' game. Either van Dijk or Laporte are still raw players in that sense.

That's exactly my thoughts with the type of big money he would cost I would sooner get someone younger that can be part of the defence for the next 5 or 6 years
Young and hungry to win
Or just young without knee ligament injuries and a certainly shortened career.

Neither of them are raw, they're both actually better defenders and more cynical than Bonucci. VVD is a far better defender than him. Laporte is better but can be a head case at times. Bonucci is a better footballer than either. We have Stones, don't really want Bonucci.

Lack of experience is a bit of a worry, personally I would rather go for a tried and tested CB like Bonucci, his experience and range of passing would be invaluable considering we may never see a fit again Kompany again, also CB is a position where you don't need legs - would save youth for the FB positions.

Both Laporte (a player I do rate) and van Dijk are still unproven at the level where we want to be at, both are playing for Europa League level clubs and both would be at Premier League inflated prices. We can't keep buying potential all the time.

I'm going to say one thing here. Potential my arse.

Guardiola rates him highly enough for starters. He is a leader, has got good positional sense, very good passing range (which is what are looking for in a defender), a solid tackler, a very good reader of the game, is strong enough and is good in the air. For me he is near enough to VInny you can get. It hasn't been the case in his career but he has sorted out his consistency in his game. The only other negative is what Juventus will want.
Is he a leader? To be fair I do t know what that means. People just say it to describe players they like. He is certainly not leading Chiellini or Barzagli anywhere.

He has great tecunique on the ball and his long pass is exquisite. That I'll give him. And its probably why Pep is enamored with him. I am too when I watch him pass but!!

He is okay at best as a tackler, average more likely. But that's okay CBs don't need to be great tackler to be good. he is decent in the air at best too.

His positioning and reading of the game is good. Bit that is easier when you are often flanked by 2 of the best CBs in the league, and when football isn't played at a helter skelter pace.

So I worry his positional awareness is boosted by the league and team he plays on.

His only superior quality is his ball control and long pass. And this is not what City fans think he is when they talk about wanting Bonnuci. Oh, he is nothing like 2012 Kompany. Not even Close.

The window for Bonucci was last summer - can't see us going for him now. We could offer him a big uplift in wages last year but I think he's now got himself a good deal at Juve.

He is a strong character and organiser and is comfortable in either playing in a back 3 or a back 4 (which is another reason why Pep might want to sign the player).
